Kairi saw the long silver hair before anything else.

If she thought about it seriously, she would have to admit that she was hoping to see spiky brown hair as well, but it didn't matter, because the tight, angry frame didn't belong to a boy, but a girl. At the time, she was more inclined to wonder how she had really picked out the silver hair against all the snow.

As she came around, she saw the tension of a fighter, which relaxed on assessing her status.

Kairi decided not to be irritated, yet.

"Hello! Are you new here?" Kairi was greeted with a flat stare from yellow eyes. "It's getting cold, isn't it?"

"I'm not interested in conversation." Kairi's smile didn't waver.

"That's ok; just come on inside."

"No. Go away." Fine, Kairi thought.

"No. You're going to stand out here, freezing and moping, until you pass out or get sick or both. So if you really want to keep that up, you'll have to put up with me telling you to get your stupid self inside the whole time." The other girl looked at her, and Kairi could tell that this time she was actually seeing Kairi for herself, rather than an annoying face. "Come on. We'll get a drink." She received an eyebrow raise.

"I think we're a little young for that."

"I wasn't planning on it being anything but tea. What were you thinking?" she teased.

"I..." Kairi didn't wait for an answer she was fairly certain wasn't really coming, instead grabbing the stranger's hand in hers and dragging her off towards Aurora's Tea and Biscuits. It was closest, and had really good cookies despite calling them 'biscuits'. The other girl didn't resist, and kept up with her very well. She abruptly pulled her hand from Kairi's as they entered, but at Kairi's glance, followed her in.

"I was not going to mope."

Kairi hitched herself up on one elbow and gave her a skeptical look.

"Oh?" A flash of pale and Kairi had a warm body straddling her.

"That's right." There was a grin and a touch, hips to thighs to bare stomach, and that hint of a smile on Marie's face.

"Mmm, then what were you going to do?"

"We'll never know, now will we?" Kairi's laughing protest was cut off with a kiss, insistent and thorough, and she didn't really mind - no not at all. Not when her hands could burrow under silver hair to hold her close, or when those precise fingers touched her in all the right places again.

The resemblance to Riku continued with the exaggerated eyeroll, and reasonable politeness to the waitress. Her companion, however, also turned out to be a punctual tea server.

"You're very good at that," Kairi offered.

"Thank you." Kairi thought for a moment about her next move, and was oddly distracted by the lines of her companion's hands on the tea cup. "And thank you, I suppose, for the compliment."

"What?"

"About my hands." Kairi blinked.

"I didn't say that out loud. You can read my thoughts?" A slight grimace, shrug, and a sip of tea.

"It's called analyzing the quantum brain waves, but yes." Kairi paused for only the briefest of moments.

"Good. Then you can't pretend not to know what I'm talking about just because you don't want to hear it." The other girl stared at her and Kairi smiled. "My name's Kairi." Her companion took a moment to compose herself by carefully refilling both of their cups.

"Soma Pieries."

"Pleased to meet you," Kairi answered. "What brings you to Hollow Bastion?" Soma watched her for a few long moments, as if deciding whether or not to answer.

"The strange beings with holes in their chests, I have heard them called the Heartless, destroyed my people. Several of us escaped through an opening that appeared in the space-time landscape, like a sudden, cartoon version of a black hole. I wouldn't have gone through it if there hadn't been others... I suppose it is good that I did." Kairi put a comforting hand on Soma's wrist.

"I'm sorry." Soma looked surprised, though Kairi couldn't quite tell if it was from touching her or the sympathy.

"Why?"

"It's not easy losing your world and getting thrust into a new one without any of your companions." The other girl's expression turned to disdain and she moved her hand out of Kairi's grasp to sip her tea and not look at her. Kairi took a sip of her own and waited.

"I am not concerned by a lack of contacts in a hostile environment."

"That seems dumb."

"What?"

"How do you even know this is a hostile environment if you don't have any contact, even a casual one?"

"You must know that presenting yourself as a trusted guide is likely to rouse my suspicion, but you also are defenseless, should I turn out hostile to you. What are your goals here?" Kairi covered her mouth with a hand to avoid laughing out loud at her companion, who looked increasingly irritated.

"You sound just like someone I know," she explained. "And my goal was to get a stubborn idiot out of the cold, and maybe find out what you were looking for. I'm looking for my friends, and it's safer and more fun to travel with someone than alone." Soma watched her, deep in thought for some time. Kairi caught the eye of the waitress and procured more tea and some 'biscuits'.

"You didn't address my point about your defensive capabilities."

"No, I didn't. Cookie?" Soma did not look at the proffered plate until Kairi raised her eyebrows and gestured, whereupon she picked one up and placed it fastidiously on her saucer.

"Do you have a means of transportation?" Kairi wondered where Soma was going with this.

"Not a very reliable one, no. You?"

"Do I have a means of transportation. Really." Kairi smiled sleepily and tugged at her hand.

"Didn't know about the Gundam at that point, or that you were a pilot. Just thought you were a prickly little warrior newly thrown out into the worlds." Marie twined her fingers through Kairi's and brought the hand up to her lips.

"That's all you thought?"

"Well, that and that you were hotter than Ifrit in the sun."

"Surprising, considering the number of people who've told me I'm an ice bitch." Kairi's smile didn't leave, but the little frown line appeared between her eyebrows. She stroked the soft, perfect skin around her lover's mouth.

"Probably has something to do with how rude you were to most everyone else."

"Maybe."

"Come here." She did so, and Kairi tucked her into the curves under her arm and at her side, where the other girl fit so unbelievably perfectly.

"You didn't mind."

"You weren't that rude to me." She turned and kissed Marie's forehead. "At least, not under the words." Her partner sighed.

"It's nice not to be the only one who sees and hears another layer to people." Kairi knew there was nothing to say to that, and so remained silent, holding Marie very close.

"Yes. However, I am not interested in traveling with someone I need to constantly protect."

"Don't worry about that," she said, with a bit more chill in her voice. Soma reacted to it, eyeing her more curiously.

"Am I reminding you of someone again?"

"Yes. I'd prefer you took my word about it, but if you insist on proof that I'm not a poor little princess needing a strong knight to protect her from every little thing, I can provide it." Kairi sensed a shift in her companion's regard. More tea and cookies were consumed, and Kairi amused herself watching the careful way Soma made sure no crumbs touched the tabletop.

"I... apologize." Kairi was a bit surprised, but kept it off her face.

"Forgiven." She would have gone on, but she felt the sudden chill of darkness. There were Heartless around. When she glanced back to her companion, she was watching Kairi with an intent expression.

"Trouble?" For some reason, the deceptively calm tone and posture along with the eagerness in her eyes made Kairi grin.

"Maybe," she drawled as she quickly left a tip on the table and rose to go. Soma matched her stride as they left the shop.

Outside, all seemed quiet, but Kairi could feel them... Soma had moved a step ahead of Kairi, and was looking around carefully.

"Kairi." Her voice was quiet but carried perfectly. Kairi met her yellow eyes and Soma glanced down a certain alley. Kairi nodded and they went over together. She snapped her fingers, bringing her Keyblade out of hiding. Soma didn't flinch, drawing a gun and holding it ready.

A darkball burst out of the alley and went straight for Soma. She stood her ground and fired straight into that gaping mouth. It kept coming, but was slowed by the fireball from Kairi. Soma sidestepped and kicked it, taking off chunks of darkness, and Kairi's blade, swung like a bat, finished it off. When she looked up, two more were coming up and Soma had stepped forward into their path, firing quickly. Kairi split her attention, shooting ice at both. As one shrugged it off and charged at Soma, Kairi shifted mental gears and called the wind to protect them both. It was a good thing, since several shadows rose up out of the ground to attack her, and she had to smack them out of existence with the Keyblade. When she looked up, Soma was putting on a clinic in martial arts, moving quickly enough that the darkballs kept running into each other. Soon they both disappeared in a puff of darkness and Soma relaxed a bit.

"What did you call these?" Kairi walked over.

"The big ones are darkballs, and the little ones that sink into the ground are shadows." She picked up the potions the shadows had left behind and Soma looked curiously at them.

"How did you know they were out here?" Kairi shrugged a little.

"It's a talent. I can feel them." Soma raised an eyebrow. "It's complicated."

"I think I can handle it." Kairi's mouth quirked to one side, but before she could answer, a Defender swooped out of nowhere and swung its huge sword at Soma's back. The other girl saw Kairi's expression and dodged, but not far enough. Kairi winced at the pain, even though Soma did not cry out, and shot fire at the Heartless. As it faltered back, Soma moved in and disarmed it. Silently roaring, it swung massive fists at her. Soma was undeterred, and every time the Defender fell back clear of Soma, it was beaten further by careful shots of Kairi's magic. Eventually, the thing was gone and Soma came back over to Kairi for conversation.

"Are there any more?" Kairi leaned on her Keyblade and closed her eyes to concentrate.

"No." The other's shoulders slumped just a little, and Kairi wouldn't have seen it if she hadn't been looking. "We should get back inside."

"I'm fine."

"Well I am exhausted. And you're bleeding. I can Cure you, but then I really won't be able to do anything until I rest a bit." Soma glared for a moment, but then agreed.

"Then you can tell me where that spear that focuses your energy came from, and what you meant about sensing the Heartless." Kairi decided that was fair.

"You nearly scared me out of my wits with that spell." Kairi giggled, and Marie scowled a little. "We just fought a battle! You should have known better!"

"I knew you wouldn't hurt me, and it was funny." She scowled further, though when Kairi's fingers started tracing the seams down her legs and up it became harder to maintain it. Kairi continued to smile as she followed up her fingers with lips and Marie gave up pretending to be angry. "Besides, you could have told what I meant to do, if you had been listening."

"Not fair," she protested, though without real feeling behind it for either present or past action. Kairi didn't answer with words, deciding that it really didn't require them. Even if they hadn't both been who and what they were, it wouldn't have really needed words to communicate. Some things were, after all, obvious.

After Kairi finished laughing - and Soma finished glaring and debating whether or not to hurt the other girl - they settled in to the room they had rented at the inn.

"Now, about the Heartless." Kairi nodded.

"I'm the Princess of Heart and a Keybearer. Did you notice that my spear looks a bit like a key?" Soma nodded. "It is. As an extension of my soul, it can lock or unlock any door, chest, or lock. The purpose is to destroy the Heartless, beings without hearts. Their purpose and end is to consume and destroy all worlds. I can lock worlds from them, and destroy them with this, but with the side effect that they tend to be attracted to me. My friends can do that, too. But they aren't crucial parts of the support structure of the worlds. Each world has a heart, and if the Heartless get to it, they can consume it just like any other heart. But they can't get the center of all worlds, the Kingdom Hearts, without me and the other Princesses of Heart. Those two things combined mean I can sense or feel Heartless around. Their darkness as opposed to my light." Soma listened carefully.

"If I hadn't seen those Heartless come upon us and destroy so much, seen your spear come out of nowhere and go back, I wouldn't believe you." She looked thoughtful. "But I do. Thank you." Kairi nodded and yawned.

"Sorry, but I'm beat. Do you mind sharing the bed? I can keep up the healing on that wound while I sleep." Soma's eyebrows rose, though whether about sharing a bed or the ability to continue spellcasting in sleep, Kairi wasn't quite sure. She was fairly certain it had something to do with Soma being just too tired to argue, but it didn't really matter that much.

In the morning, Kairi woke to a completely numb arm, and Soma's voice.

"Do you like me for myself or just because I remind you of your friend?"

"What?" Kairi was definitely not awake yet.

"Answer the question." Kairi blinked the sleep from her eyes and frowned, thinking about what Soma meant.

"I wouldn't have made the effort if I didn't want you." Both blushed, as they were rather curled around each other, with Kairi's hand over Soma's wound, radiating healing warmth. Neither moved, though.

"You're not sure, and we both know it." Kairi was annoyed by that.

"I did think you were him, and you're both rude idiots, but I don't protect just anyone." Soma was about to protest and Kairi put her free hand over the other girl's mouth. "Ok, I do, but I can help you and you can help me. You've got transportation. I can sense the Heartless and know the worlds better than you do. We fight well together, and by the way, I don't go to bed with people I don't trust. So there." Kairi blushed harder at the second-to-last part of that. Soma might have blushed, but Kairi couldn't see.

"I'm a useful tool, then." Kairi twisted to meet Soma's eyes, and her own narrowed.

"You. Aren't. Listening. I like you, Soma, and it has nothing to do with your resemblance to Sora or Riku." Soma's calculating look did nothing to dispel the resemblance to Riku, though. "It's what brought me over to talk with you in the first place, but that's not what kept me here despite your efforts to push me away."

They both realized about then that they were quite comfortably and even intimately curled around each other. As Soma glared, noticeably not as hard as before, Kairi's eyes challenged her to move away. Soma gave up and relaxed.

"If I moved, I suppose it would disrupt your healing," she explained. Kairi's eyebrow arched.

"A bit. We can get up soon, since now that I'm awake I can focus on it." She did so, and Soma felt the heat of the healing get a little stronger with the muffled bells of the spell. She also noticed Kairi having a bit of difficulty concentrating through the feeling of her body against Kairi's, in her arms…

"Um... if you want, and we're where no one else can hear, you can call me 'Marie'."

"Thank you, Marie," Kairi said, with soft wonder. The sound sent an unexpectedly warm shiver down Marie's spine. "I can tell it's private, but if you'd be ok telling me about it, I'd like that." Marie was silent for a long time, body and mind, and Kairi was sure that she had fallen asleep again when she spoke quietly.

"It's what the pilot who saved me called me."
