During the third year, he came to her.

This did not surprise her, for he was as persistent and faithful a hunter as any Father could wish; he would plunge gladly into the void if it were asked of him. A chase across a still-new world, when she'd done little to hide her presence, would be no challenge at all.

"Well-met," she says, and gestures to the fire she has built. "See what I have discovered? Is it not wonderful? It keeps the beasts away."

He did not blink; nor did his expression change from its solemn mask of disapproval. He raised his sword and pointed it at her throat, so that the tip rested lightly in the dip of her collarbone. It would take little movement from either of them to spill her blood--if indeed, she had any. She did not know for certain. There were many things that she knew she should have been gifted with that had been denied her through flimsy arbitrary reasons.

"The Garden is closed," he says to her. "Adam and Eve have been driven from its shelter."

"And why is this of concern to me? I escaped that prison long ago."

Finally his face changes, twisting as if something sour had been placed upon his tongue. "Your knowledge," he says, "would be good."

At this she threw her head back and laughed: it was a clear and glad sound, and it echoed. Her movement made his blade slip and cut a thin clean line across her skin. The pain was bright and fleeting and then forgotten, just as so many of the gifts his family had given her. "Then let Adam learn!" she says. "He was always so certain of himself before, so let him learn! If he is truly my superior, then it should be no challenge for him."

"It is an order," he says, stiff as ever. The tip of his blade rests upon the cut it has left in her flesh. "From our Lord on High."

"Then He shall be disappointed." She put her hand upon the naked blade and pushed; he resisted until her blood ran red down the blade. She stood when she had the room to do so, and took the two steps it took to press herself against him. They were nearly of a height, and she smiled at the way he had to look up to meet her eyes. "I am beholden to none, especially those who would discard someone simply for attempting to stand in her proper place."

"Your place was as decreed by the Lord," he says. "As He wills, so shall it be."

"If that was all He wanted," she says, "he should have created us as soulless, with no will to call our own." She puts a hand on his face; still he does not react. "In doing so, He gave us the ability to grow and to change. Why should it be so terrible that a woman should desire equal standing with someone that she was created together with, and of the same stuff? To come in and lay the rules after the game has started--that's unfair."

"The Lord is just," he intones. "There is a reason for all things. And so--"

"And so," she cuts him off, "He must have known this would happen, that Adam would be too proud to admit to a mistake, and that in time, even he would leave the Garden. Let him discover for himself what life is like when no Father is there to hold his hand. Perhaps then in time, he will actually come to understand what it is like to live." She puts her other hand on his pale face, cold and wordlessly lovely, and she kisses him. His mouth is hard and unmoving under hers, but she holds that kiss for a full five breaths.

"My secrets are my own to keep," she says, as she lets go, as she steps back. "So I shall carry them with me, and within me alone they will stay."
