Death Note (Rem/Misa)
Title: Want
Author: Cadence
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 700
A/N: Prompt: Death Note, Rem/Misa: Desire in thought only - "If I could do more than look."
When Misa first picked up the Death Note and saw Rem, she screamed.
Rem had expected that, of course—she was quite aware of the way humans saw things—and yet it still caused an odd twisting sensation. Something like losing a game of dice, or perhaps even like a withdrawal pang.
Misa shifted into understanding quickly, though, once Rem explained what the notebook was. And after a moment her face lit up, with that unique light it had. So strange to see it in person.
"That means Kira must have one of these notebooks, too!"
"Yes, there is no doubt of that." Rem said.
Misa's face still glowed for the hours after that, through most of her photo shoot. The photographer complimented her on it. Rem glared invisibly and wondered what he would do if he knew what caused it.
That night, Misa killed an executive from the advertising company that she was currently working for. Arisawa Jirou, illness, she wrote.
"I have to test it," she'd said cheerfully. "And he's an old man! There's nothing suspicious about him dying of some disease."
Rem still wondered if it was entirely safe, but she'd been watching Misa for months now. The man had been trying at every opportunity to force her into sex. So Rem said nothing. The Death Note was Misa's, and she should use it to make her happy.
The photo shoot the next day was canceled because of the old man's death, so Misa began to form her plan to meet Kira.
"What are those for?" Rem asked, voice rasping incredulously as Misa arrayed blank video tapes on the floor. She sat cross-legged, and wore gloves—black velvet up to her elbows.
"I'm going to call out Kira, of course!" She pulled out paper and a black pen and leaned to lay prone. As she lounged on the floor, ankles hooked in the air, she began to sketch. "Rem, do you know about television?"
"Of course, Misa. I've watched the human world longer than you've been alive."
Misa paused in her embellishment of the K. "Of course. Well, I'm going to prove that I have Kira's powers. On television! Then the real Kira will have to notice." Rem couldn't speak for a moment at that. She couldn't possibly—
"I just have to decide who to kill! That's hard, though. Having to know people's real names is a pain, Rem."
And then Rem knew what to say. What she had to say. There were laws. "There is a way. A deal." Misa sat up, her eyes bright.
Ten minutes later, Misa took the deal, and her eyes shimmered even brighter. Shinigami-bright.
Misa immediately flipped open a magazine from her desk and grinned. "This is amazing!" She scrambled for the Death Note and wrote down a name. Then she watched the magazine page. Forty seconds later, the characters and numbers vanished from the face of one of the photos. Misa let out a peal of giggles.
"He really died, Rem?"
"Yes." Rem said flatly. "You can't see anything if the person is dead." But Rem couldn't take her eyes off the numbers above Misa's head. Her lifespan halved, so easily, and after she was already living on time not her own.
"Thank you, Rem! This will really help!" Misa carried a stack of magazines over to her bed and began paging through them.
After a few minutes, Rem felt the need to ask, "Misa, are you serious about television? It is hugely risky. You'll be in danger."
"Definitely." Misa said as she made a note in the margins of a page. "I don't care what the risks are. I need to meet Kira."
There was nothing that Rem could do, in face of that. She couldn't interfere. And this was what Misa wanted.
And that was just it, of course. Why she'd given the Note to Misa, and why it's previous owner had been willing to die for her. Misa wasn't like other humans. Her mind often worked like a shinigami's, but the glaring, shining exception was that Misa wanted. The desire was infectious, somehow. Rem was drawn to her bright eyes, her focused dedication. Her life, and the way she spent it so easily.
Rem wanted Misa, even though there was nothing for a shinigami to want.
