It was nights like this that always seemed to make everything different between the two of them. The sky was dark and filled with stars, something that the people of their district barely knew. The chaos of their every day life was still with them, the fights still happened, but during the beautiful nights, far and spread, they got along and everything almost seemed right.
“Sion,” the dark haired boy called from his bed, watching as the other cleaned up what was left of their dinner. “We should do something.”
He was confused for a moment, as to what he could mean by that, but he had decided to go along with anything the other said long ago. He trusted Nezumi with his life, even if the other didn’t.
“Like what?” They had these kinds of discussions all the time: one of them would bring up something to do and the other would shoot it down. It wasn’t that the other didn’t want to do whatever was mentioned, they just knew that one way or another they’d have to face reality.
“Maybe we could agree on something this time.” New ideas always popped up, but never on the nice days. It gave him hope, even if it only lit the back of his mind. The thought of agreeing to the temperamental boy’s idea made Sion laugh lightly, shaking his head as he began washing a cup in their makeshift sink.
“I’d love to, but agreeing with you seems impossible.” Nezumi stopped watching him for a while, staring at the ceiling in a sort of wonder as he thought up something that would be better for the both of them.
“It isn’t safe here for you.”
The white haired boy turned around to look at the other, pausing in his chores to do so. They’d long since known that, but Nezumi barely ever brought it up. The only place he was allowed to go on his own was to dog keeper’s. He’d gotten into trouble even at the supermarket.
“I’m learning, give me a chance.” He already knew that he had. He’d gotten numerous chances, and each time he got into more trouble than the last. By now, he’d forgotten about the dishes and was standing over the bed, staring at Nezumi as he watched the ceiling.
When their eyes met, Nezumi sighed and pulled Sion next to him by the hand, moving against the wall to make room.
“I don’t know how to save you from this place.” It wasn’t a confession that he’d been expecting from Nezumi.
“Save me? I… don’t know what that’s supposed to mean. I’m fine here.” They both new better, though. They knew that Sion was the smartest person in their entire district; keeping him here would be a waste of a magnificent mind.
“You can’t stay here.” Nezumi turned over and stared at him then, propped up on his hand and elbow.
“If I wait long enough, maybe Number Six will let me return… If I can find a way to cure the strange bees, then maybe…” He trailed off as he thought of his mother, of Safu, both who he would likely never see again. Nezumi had warned him of that before he’d even left the town.
“Tch, yeah, sure. I’m still not allowed back. You can’t ever go back, idiot.”
“Maybe another town would let us stay there. We could go together and make something for the two of us… They don’t use wrist bands like we do; we could sneak in and live there…”
Silence settled in over them as they let the words sink in, knowing that they wouldn’t work either.
“We need a better plan.” Sion nodded his agreement and turned to his friend, sighing and closing his eyes again. “The perfect plan, not just a better one.” The smaller boy again nodded his agreement and inched closer to the other.
Nezumi watched him, watched the way his chest moved when he breathed and the way his eyelids fluttered even though they were closed. One of those strange and stupid thoughts hit him then, and it was hard to resist. He moved his own face closer to the pale one and rested his lips on the other’s, closing his own eyes as he moved halfway on top of him.
When he pulled away, Sion was watching him with wide eyes, his cheeks a bright shade of red. They’d kissed before, and it’d never been a big deal, but this was a different kind of motion, one of need and want. He didn’t want to leave him, never. Even if it meant giving his current life up.
“I don’t really want to leave,” he whispered as he shook his head lightly. “We could just— ”
“Lets run away,” Nezumi grabbed his hand then, holding it tightly in his own. “We don’t ever need to look back; just do it.”
The thought touched Sion, but he knew his place. With Nezumi, no matter where. He didn’t know how to make the other understand.
“We wouldn’t have anywhere to go. Here, we have everything, even if it isn’t luxurious, I couldn’t be happier Nezumi.”
They stared into each other’s eyes for another few minutes before kissing again, softly and slowly. It only lasted a few seconds, just like always, but it conveyed their feelings perfectly. They already had everything they needed; Nezumi was too hung up on the other’s old life to even think he could be happy here. How else could he make him believe that?
“I could… try to get into somewhere else. Then we’d be free to do whatever we wanted.” But they already were. They woke up when they wanted, and went to bed in the same manner. There were no freedom-smothering laws to deal with here; they could do as they pleased.
He shook his head and smiled at him, showing him enough to see what he thinking.
And it turned into another one of those ideas that were shot down, forgotten the next morning when they both woke up to each other.
