Summary: Sephiroth encounters Aeris in the Lifestream.
Lifestream caressed his cheek and settled beneath his body. Its movement was a gentle touch that bathed his soul with forgiveness. He opened his eyes and alien tears reflected the green glow that danced around him.
“Hello, Sephiroth.”
His eyes narrowed.
That voice. It was familiar. Was it Mother?
No, Mother didn’t sing when she spoke.
This voice was softer, like flowers in morning sunlight.
“Aeris?”
The Lifestream seemed to smile and materialized a form pale as a rose’s petal. Blurred forms tinged with time flanked her entrance.
“You remember me.”
“I…” He stopped, images of past deeds flickering in his mind like a butterfly’s wing. “No.”
“It’s all right,” she said, kneeling before him. “I didn’t suffer. The world heard my call and whispered its response when the moment was right.”
“I wanted it to scream,” Sephiroth said quietly. A tear trickled down his cheek. “I wanted them all to scream.”
“And yet it seems that inside you were the one who was screaming. It was so loud that you became deaf.”
“Her voice was louder. I only wanted her to hear me. Everything else became silence.”
“Jenova joined the Lifestream,” Aeris said. “She devoured its purest essence and became changed when her hunger was at long last sated. Here she does not wish to destroy, only create. However, sometimes creation must occur on the wing of destruction and that is why you are here, destroyed by the Other so that you could create a new afterlife.”
“I don’t understand,” Sephiroth said.
“You exist in the memory of man and there will be a time when man will be no more. Now is the time for you to allow your spirit free reign in the Lifestream, coupled with the souls of the planet. Allow the planet’s lifeblood to be the archive of your soul so that it may learn from the creatures it birthed. So that it may conserve the memories of all the others lost in the void of consumption.”
“How do I do that?”
Aeris smiled and extended her hand. “Trust, forgive, and do not forget the lessons you have learned.”
Sephiroth took her hand and gasped as his store of mako crackled in response. Electric touch surged between them and rose in a symphonic swell of energy. The air froze and crystallized into raindrop particles of life that trembled in a chord of anticipation.
The avatar of the Lifestream smiled once again and wove the threads of his fate into the living tapestry of the planet.
