He worked with Fran several times before they made their partnership official. It was Balthier that proposed it – he hoped she would accept, but couldn’t imagine Fran being one to admit to needing or even wanting a permanent partner. He finally contacted her in the usual way, and they arranged to meet at the Sandsea.
Balthier had planned in advance how to approach it, but when Fran walked in the door he almost forgot everything. From what he had heard and witnessed all viera were beautiful, but Fran never ceased to take his breath away. He stood from his seat to cover and bowed when she approached the table he’d claimed.
“You have a proposition for me?” she asked after they exchanged the usual pleasantries (polite inquiries and just as polite but non specific answers about business, health, etc.) as they ordered and were served their drinks. Balthier nodded.
Fran heard out his proposition quietly, unreadable as always. Balthier had been expecting it, but it was still hard to be charming, to be persuasive, in the face of such stoicism. He almost stumbled over his words once or twice, but covered before the slip was obvious. Finally he’d talked himself out.
“So,” he said, “what do you think?”
Fran turned her mug in her hands, seeming to think. Then she smiled.
“I think you are far too dramatic for your own good. But you are correct. We would work well together. I accept.”
Balthier smiled, trying for “confident and pleased” instead of just “relieved.”
“Thank you,” he replied. “After all, a leading man is nothing with his leading lady.”
After that, they worked together for a long time before specifics of their partnership changed. Balthier had been trying to hard to keep their relationship strictly professional without flirting, without offending Fran, that he was actually taken aback when Fran cornered him in the engine room of the Strahl to demand a kiss – then more – from him. He ended up on his back right there as she rode him, shuddering, to completion. He knew then that he was the luckiest damned pirate in the skies.
He had found his perfect leading lady, and he had no intention of letting her go.
