Ice Queen
I’d seen them watching me the entire time we were in town, laughing behind their hands, snickering like young boys. It wasn’t like I didn’t know what they were discussing, like I didn’t notice the way they ogled me and undressed me with their eyes. It wasn’t until the coin came out that I moved on, making sure to put enough distance between them and me that I didn’t have to wonder about the wagers they were placing.
Of course, it didn’t surprise me that much when the upper deck door opened that night to reveal them, standing in the light of the stairs, watching me. I pretended not to notice them. They really weren’t hard to ignore, though some part of me, deep down inside, burned in anger that they thought of me as nothing more than a piece of meat, a voluptuous figure in armor, a potential fuck.
So I turned my face into the wind as I moved toward the bow of the ship, comforted myself with the first smattering of stars to grace the deepest blue sky. In the distance, there was still a blush of color to the horizon, but with the death of the sun came the chill of night and I shuddered, wrapping my cloak around myself.
I didn’t hear them approach, probably because of the propellers roaring overhead. But they were there, before I knew it, one on either side. I ignored them at first, not because I actually disliked them, but because the more I thought about their childish antics, the more annoyed I became.
We stood there until the sky sparkled with a million jeweled stars and the night birds sang their mournful song in the trees that passed just below the airship. When the night wind grew brisk, I shuddered again, wondering what weather morning would bring.
Edgar blocked my way when I turned, looking me up and down with a hopeful smile. “It’s cold out here tonight, don’t you think?”
My head bobbed. “I do.”
“We could...” His smile grew suggestive. “Warm you up.”
“Is that all I am to you?” I asked, pleased when I managed to control my temper. They weren’t worth the time I’d already wasted on anger. “A bet?” I looked from him to Sabin. “A chance to fuck?”
To his credit, Sabin looked uncomfortable, but Edgar stood his ground. They were handsome, both of them, and I couldn’t deny they’d both probably be delicious in bed. But, I was a general, not a whore. I wouldn’t sleep where I was a bet, I wouldn’t copulate where I was a prize.
“Good night, Gentlemen.” I stepped around Edgar and crossed the deck without looking back. It was never good to make an enemy of a king. In the morning, we’d all pretend it hadn’t happened and hopefully wouldn’t speak of it again.
Thoughts of warmth and sex weighed heavily on my body as well as my mind as I dropped down the stairs and into the belly of the air ship. The thought of probing hands and gentle lips lit a fire inside me, a fire that sleeping wouldn’t quench.
I strode the hallway with quick, quiet steps, stopping only once to ask myself if I was sure, if this was really what I wanted. It was, and I was surprised to realize that I’d wanted it for a long time: a haven from death and destruction, from cold emotions and senseless killing. I hadn’t been held, hadn’t been less than a killing machine in a long time.
There was silence when I knocked, so I knocked again, wondering if he was asleep already, wondering if I’d made a mistake in coming. I looked back the way I’d come, hoping Edgar and Sabin didn’t find me there.
But, the door opened before I could retreat and Locke stood framed in a shaft of pale light, hair mussed, a blanket wrapped around his waist. A smile lit his face at the sight of me.
“I was hoping it was you.” He stepped back, pushing the door open a little more.
“You said...I thought...”
“You’re always welcome here,” he assured me, taking my hand when I sought to turn away.
He drew me in and took my cloak, led me deeper into his suite of rooms. I wasn’t surprised to find Setzer waiting for him in bed. And Setzer didn’t seem surprised to see me.
“What took you so long?” he asked with a warm smile.
I shook my head while I undressed. It wasn’t worth discussion and I didn’t feel like conversation anyway. They didn’t ogle, didn’t stare, but when I turned to join them, they studied me with appreciative eyes.
They welcomed me into bed between them, into the warmth they’d already created, into the promise of heat to come. I kissed one and then the other as I settled into the center of the bed. Locke latched onto one breast and Setzer the other and as I closed my eyes, easing back against the pillow, their hands dropped to coax my legs open and their hands intertwined, plunging into me, exploring me until I gave into them and gave myself to them.
We made love more times than I could count that night, the three of us lost in the comfort of one another. And when we slept, I slept better than I had in a long time, warm and secure and wrapped in my lovers’ arms.
