“You keep us safe that way.”
Sera turned from her view of the base, startled, her song breaking off mid phrase. Argilla stood by the door, leaning against the wall. Sera smiled, embarrassed, and looked out the window again.
“It’s just singing. I wouldn’t be able to help if anything really bad happened here.”
Argilla shook her head. “That’s not what I mean. We could use more fighters, yes, but we have enough to fend off an attack.” She moved from the wall and began to walk towards where Sera perched on the window sill.
“Gale. Cielo. Me. Heat. Serph. We do the fighting. We feel the hunger it brings. But you.” She sat next to Sera, facing her.
“You keep us safe from that hunger; you keep it from taking over. Your song keeps us safe from ourselves.” Her hand moved from its place on her lap to cover Sera’s. She looked up in surprise, and found her eyes locked with Argillas’. There was something in them she did not know, the word “desperation” in her head, but she did not know its meaning.
“Help us keep that hunger under control. Please. It could ruin us if you do not.”
