“Come on Shigure, let us in!!”
“But that would leave poor Miss Honda all alone on this frigid night. Unless of course she stays with me, I’ve got a new book that needs-
“Pervert!” Kyo nearly burst down the screen.
“I don’t mind staying with her,” Yuki said.
“The hell you will! If you’re staying then I’m staying too!”
“Um…you two don’t have to worry about me,” Tohru said. “I had some cold nights in the tent and I was all alone then. I…I don’t mind.”
“Well, I mind,” Kyo said. “You’re not gonna stick it out alone.”
“We can room together,” Yuki suggested. “Just for one night. The renovations on our rooms should be completed by then. All we need are our mats and a few blankets.”
“I’m not sleeping next to you,” Kyo snarled at Yuki.
“Well, I refuse to sleep next to you,” Yuki said. In a low voice he added, “You probably have fleas.”
“What?! What was that?!”
“Oh nothing,” Yuki said easily.
“Did you say fleas?? Well guess what Mr. Rat, what animal do you think was responsible for the Plague, huh?”
“I’m surprised you’ve done your studies,” Yuki said with a smirk.
“Shut up!” Kyo raised his fist.
“Can this wait until morning?” Tohru stepped nervously between them.
“Fine,” Kyo and Yuki muttered at the same time.
They changed into their respective PJs – Kyo in a comfy t-shirt & flannels, Yuki in silk pajamas, and Tohru in a pj set that was festooned with Hello Kitty.
Kyo stared and Tohru blushed. “I told you I liked cats,” she stammered.
Yuki coughed away a chuckle.
They spread out their mats and Tohru ended up in the middle. “This is cozy,” she smiled as she snuggled her blankets.
“Very much so,” Yuki said.
“Whatever,” Kyo said, turning away from them.
“Good night, Yuki. Good night, Kyo.”
“Night,” Kyo mumbled, curling into a ball.
“Good night, Miss Honda,” Yuki smiled before he laid back.
Tohru laid back for a few moments and started to shiver. She drew the blankets tighter around her and sneezed.
Kyo turned to look at her. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing!” Tohru brought the blankets up over her nose.
Yuki rose from his blankets. “Your teeth are chattering. Why didn’t you tell us you were cold?” He edged closer to Tohru, placing part of his blanket over her as he snuggled against her.
“I…I..”
Kyo glared at Yuki and edged against her on the other side. “I don’t wanna wake up next to a frozen corpse.”
“A…a…corpse!”
“Stop scaring her,” Yuki chided.
“I was just kidding,” Kyo said. “I can’t help it that she takes things so literally.”
Several hours passed and Tohru was sound asleep. Kyo and Yuki kept their eyes half-lidded, each suspecting the other to try something.
“You asleep yet,” Kyo whispered.
“No,” Yuki murmured.
“Damn Rat.” Kyo nuzzled against Tohru.
“Stupid Cat.” Yuki made sure Tohru was tucked in tight.
They fell asleep against Tohru and in her sleep – she smiled.
