The wind is blowing cool tonight, up in the hills of Iacon where Optimus Prime and Elita-One. They are holding hands and leaning against each other as they survey the moon that is gracefully moving over their dying city.
“You leave in the morning then, Optimus?”
He nods slowly.
“Tomorrow at 0700.”
Elita smiles weakly and turns away just a bit, optics locked on the moon that glows so brilliantly above. Its light is bright, but not at all warm.
“Elita, is something the matter?”
She dares not turn to meet Optimus’s gaze, not now. She will break down if that happens because the fact of the matter is that Elita does not want Optimus to leave, does not want to be parted from him for such a long time. In the end, though, Optimus is the Prime. He was bonded to Cybertron long before he had ever been bonded to her and She will always be first and foremost in his heart. Elita's petty weaknessses should not factor into the equation.
“I... Optimus, I’m going to miss you dearly when you leave, but you must do what you must and I cannot...” She trails off, then finally she looks up at him, having found that core of iron within her spark that fills her expression with cold solemnity. “No, I will not hold you back from your duty.”
Optimus cups Elita’s head in his hands and turns her to face him. Where her words were somber, his are passionate, burning with intensity.
“Elita, no matter what I do or where I go, I will always be incomplete without you. My whole being, my whole existence, they’re worth nothing if you’re not here.”
Optimus’s voice deepens and he leans in, pressing their foreheads together. His optics glow even brighter than the moon above and for a moment, Elita feels like she is falling into them.
“Alone, I’m fatally flawed. You are the one who brings me closer to Primus every day. Just saying your name is like a prayer, Elita. And though I’m leaving you now, I swear upon my spark that I will return to you and may I burn in the Pit if I fail to do so.”
Elita hums softly and raises her hands to cover her bonded’s, delicate fingers coming to rest gracefully on the backs of his hands. In the light of his earnest words, what can she do but love him?
“Optimus, I don’t have eloquent words or fancy speeches for you.”
She reaches up and slides his battle mask off slowly with one hand, running her knuckles down his cheek in a gentle caress.
“I’ll wait for you. As long as you want me, I’ll wait for your return, and I’ll wait until the stars extinguish one by one, if need be.”
She smiles. It's as if a light has burst from behind the clouds.
“I love you Optimus.”
Something flickers through Optimus's optics, something sad and regretful. He sighs unhappily.
“Sometimes I wish that I-”
“Shh.”
Elita presses a finger to his lips, a wry smile on her face.
“What-ifs and could-have-beens only lead to regrets. There are better things that we could be doing with what time we have left.”
Then she leans in to press her mouth to his. Optimus lowers his arms to wrap around Elita’s waist and he lies down, pulling her on top of him. That night, atop the hills of Iacon, the two reaffirm their bond, crying out their pleasure to the sky.
The moon sets, but the sun is rising.
