"Heads, I win." Setzer grinned. "Tails, you lose."

Edgar's head snapped up. He'd suspected as much from the gambler, but he wasn't as stupid as the other folks the Setzer had conned. "Wait just a minute..."

The gambler grinned. With a shrug, he turned away. "Sounded good, didn't it?"

The king of Figaro turned in his chair to watch the flamboyant Setzer as he paced his way around the room. "What, exactly, is it that you want from me, Setzer?"

"Not so much." The other man plucked at his cuffs. "Only that you convince the pretty Celes..." His smile turned dreamy. "The one that looks so much like my beloved Maria...that she wants to spend the...night, with me."

"This...this is highly improper," Edgar stammered. His cheeks flushed at the suggestion. True, he fancied himself a charmer, but...

"So's your favorite double-headed coin, Majesty. But..." Another shrug. "You choose to ignore that."

"I've never hurt anyone with..."

"How would this be hurting anyone, dear Edgar?" The smile turned back into a grin. "Maria has gone into hiding and I'm feeling a little...needy, shall we say. It's not like I'm asking the good general to whore herself out to me or be mine for life. One night, that's all I'm asking. Surely the good king of Figaro, whose legendary charm precedes him, can think of a way to arrange that."

"I don't know." The way Setzer put it, there didn't seem to be any harm. It wasn't like he was going to be duping or tricking Celes. It was more like...coercing...and while he didn't like the thought of it, she would be the one to make the final decision. "If she says no..."

Setzer leaned over the back of the chair, so close that Edgar could feel the heat of his breath against his neck. "I won't take no for an answer."

Rattled by the other man's closeness, Edgar eased himself from his chair. Unconsciously, he fingered the doubled-headed coin in his pocket. He'd never used it for anything wrong and it had freed his brother from a throne he'd never wanted to share.

"How about a little wager, then?"

Edgar's eyes narrowed as he turned to regard the gambler. He didn't trust the other man. Setzer was rumored to be totally unscrupulous when it came to getting what he wanted and he guessed those rumors to be true after his attempted kidnap of Celes from the Opera House. "What kind of wager?"

"I'm not particularly picky at this point." Setzer rubbed one hand across the bulge in his pants. "If you're as good as everyone says you are, convince the lovely lady to sleep with me. If not, you take her place."

"That's outrageous!" Edgar exploded. He flinched, hoping the others hadn't heard. Lowering his voice, he said, "Why would I..."

"Because, if you don't ante up, my friend, I'll expose you and your double-headed coin, and the poor King of Figaro will be a laughing stock." The gambler batted his eyes at the king. "And we couldn't have that, now, could we?"
