Amazing. My favorite part was the snippet you used as the summary: "the man he would have loved, if he had ever truly known him." Probably one of the most tragic things I've ever read. There's brutality and madness and pain in both these characters; agony and fear. Neither is perfect, both are damaged, and the lost chance for true happiness in their togetherness lies in the past before they even met... but both men have the wish for moments of understanding, safety, and comfort. That hope may be battered by impatience and guilt and helpless rage, but there is still a glimmer.
