Sakura’s face was so red she could scarcely bear to look up at Syaoran. The boy was almost equally as red and even more unable to speak a word than Sakura was. This went on for several more minutes until Sakura grabbed Syaoran’s hands and said loudly,

“You go first!”

Syaoran shook his head hastily. “No, princess, I insist. You say what you wanted.”

Still gripping Syaoran’s hands, Sakura looked at him determinedly. “Syaoran, I just wanted to tell you that — I wanted to thank you — ”

“Oh, just give him a kiss already!” a cheerful voice exclaimed, interrupting. Sakura and Syaoran shot away from each other like they’d been burned as Fai popped up behind the two. Beaming, he ruffled Syaoran’s hair, earning himself a glare from the boy.

“No one’s going to kiss anyone,” Syaoran muttered, glancing embarrassedly at Sakura.

“Fai, you shouldn’t tease,” Sakura added, wringing her hands together.

Fai pouted exaggeratedly, clearly amused by the two of them. “Aw, not even a hug?”

Sakura looked from Fai to Syaoran, whose gaze was fixed on anything but Sakura or Fai. “Well, I did want to say thank you for working so hard to find my feathers,” she admitted, sounding almost apologetic.

After a pause, she held out her arms, letting Syaoran make the first move. Syaoran looked like he didn’t know whether to kill Fai or thank him, but nevertheless moved forward and gave Sakura a tentative hug.

“Awww, how sweet, Syaoran’s embarrassed,” Fai cooed, and before either teen could do anything he had turned their awkward hug into an even more awkward group hug.

“F-Fai!” Sakura exclaimed, but pressed up against Syaoran by Fai’s long arms, the sound came out rather muffled.

“Let go, Fai,” Syaoran protested, but the magician only smiled and ruffled Syaoran’s hair again.

What occurred next happened so fast that they never saw it coming; it being Mokona, who, upon passing through the room and seeing the group hug, came bounding over and crashed into the three with a shout of, “Mokona wants to cuddle too!”

Sakura yelped, teetering over with Syaoran still in her arms and Fai’s arms still around her. Thinking quickly, Fai twisted their group around so they wouldn’t all land on the princess as they fell over, landing on the conveniently situated nearby couch. Mokona bounced happily on Fai’s head.

“Mokona!” Syaoran hissed, the name coming out much quieter than intended. He didn’t know which was more embarrassing, that Sakura was sitting in his lap or that he was sitting on Fai’s lap. Sakura looked down at him, her face extraordinarily close, but instead of being mortified, she was laughing. Syaoran couldn’t help but chuckle at the situation as well.

Still smiling, Fai reached up and patted Mokona atop its head before picking it up and setting it on his chest so he could tilt his head back and greet Kurogane, who had stopped in the doorway, an expression of distaste on his face.

“Hey hey, Kuro-tan,” Fai said, waving lazily. “You should come join us! Maybe cuddling will get rid of that scowl on your face.”

The said scowl, if anything, deepened. “Why would I ever do anything so ridiculous?” Kurogane grunted, arms crossed in annoyance. “You’re acting like a bunch of little kids.”

“But Kurogane,” Sakura said, smiling at him, “we are. At least, Syaoran and I are.”

Syaoran attempted to sit up a little straighter — he didn’t want anyone thinking he was a little kid, even if it were true — but only succeeded in elbowing Fai in the chest.

Kurogane shrugged, gesturing towards Fai. “That’s no excuse for him.” He turned, meaning to leave the room, but stopped as he caught sight of Sakura’s expression. Sighing, he muttered, “I am not cuddling with anyone. Ever.”

Sakura looked so depressed that Syaoran would have liked to go punch Kurogane right in the face. Luckily for him, it seemed that Kurogane couldn’t stand to see Sakura disappointed whether he liked it or not, for he grudgingly came over and sat down on the far end of the couch.

“This’s as close as I’m getting,” he told her, eyeing Fai pointedly.

Fai either did get the message or chose to ignore it. “Aw, Kuro-tan’s shy too,” he said, wriggling his feet out from underneath the two on top of him and resting his heels on Kurogane’s thigh. Kurogane glared at him, but Mokona decided to jump ship from Fai onto Kurogane’s head.

“Shy, shy!” Mokona sang, bouncing up and down until Kurogane grabbed it and threw it back at Fai.

Sakura twisted around, smiling sweetly at Kurogane and putting a hand on his shoulder. “Thank you, Kurogane.”

Kurogane just grunted noncommittally and looked away from her. Sakura took her hand from his shoulder, laughing.

Despite being in such an awkward position, with Fai being so touchy and Kurogane being so grumpy (but that’s how it always was, wasn’t it), when Sakura laughed like that, Syaoran felt like nothing bad could ever happen to them.

Until Mokona fell over and landed on his face. Then it was back to life as normal.
