It was unexpected.
On the other side of the door it sat, a shiny red bento in a clear plastic wrap, tied up at the top with a red rubber band. A torn piece of notebook paper was taped to the outside with 'Mitsuru' scrawled on the front. Mitsuru Kirijo bent over and carefully picked up the lunch box, a small smile curling on her lips. She turned the shred of paper around to search for a second name, only to be disappointed by the bleed marks of the ink from the front side.
She retreated back into her dorm room, still in her night gown. She pulled off the rubber band and plastic, opening the bento to examine it. Quite possibly it was the most appetizing bento she'd seen or smelled.
The temperature of the package hinted that whoever created the meal was up before her; a huge surprise in that she was almost always the first up in the dorm. There were three compartments, one filled with steamed white rice and tuna, another with watermelon and honeydew balls, and in the third a white cupcake topped with pink frosting and a swirl of green icing. It was as much artistic as it was delicious-looking.
She sealed the box back up with an even bigger smile, bending forward and blushing. What a treat! She wanted to eat it for breakfast, she was so excited. She quickly got a hold of herself and set the box on the bed, refocusing on starting her morning rituals.
As she stood beneath the shower, buttoned her shirt, brushed her soft locks...she wondered who on earth would take the time to do something sweet like that for her. "Obviously somebody did this to show their affection or admiration." She stated out loud, proudly picking up her specially-prepared lunch and letting it rest snugly between her chest and stack of books. "It shouldn't be too hard to figure out who did this."
She stepped lively down the stairs after leaving her room, the first one ready to head out the door. She brushed her hair back self-consciously and turned to face the staircase, ready to thank her admirer for the delicious lunch.
About five minutes later, Akihiko descended the stairs, books and boxing gloves ready to go. He greeted his friend with a warm smile, standing to her side to wait for the others. "Morning, Mitsuru. You're looking nice today."
"Why thank you." Mitsuru blushed, placing her hand on top of the lunch box. Obviously it was Akihiko. Only he would do something nice like that for Mitsuru. "That was very nice of you to do something so thoughtful like that."
"Oh?" Akihiko looked slightly confused, but still returned the warm expression with a smile. "It was just the polite thing to do. I do it every morning..."
"I was going to go out for lu-" She paused, then matched glances with Akihiko. "Huh?"
"What's wrong? Are you feeling alright?"
"Y-yes. I'm sorry." She blushed, and flipped her hair back in an attempt to cover her embarrassment. "I'm glad you do that, it makes you all the more a proper gentleman."
"Hehe, okay. No worries Mitsuru." Akihiko chuckled, then directed his attention to the stairs. Yukari and Minato hopped down the stairs together, the junior girl telling the silent boy all about what she heard the English test was going to cover, and that she had only known about half of the words on the vocabulary section.
"I'm gonna go ahead, because I NEED to study those last few words, or I'm in deep trouble. Later!" She waved at the group, slipping her coat on and racing out the door. She was gone by the time Minato looked ready to actually respond. He slowly turned to the two seniors, flashing a friendly smile at them.
"Could Arisato have possibly...?" Mitsuru wondered to herself. Minato was very quiet, so perhaps he had unusual ways of expressing his interest in girls. It was obvious he wasn't quite into Yukari; she was just a friend to him from what she could observe.
"I think I'm going to go ahead too. I'll see you guys later." Akihiko bid the ladies farewell, rushing out the door.
Now was the perfect to chance to thank Minato and not embarrass him in front of the others. "Arisato." The boy turned to her. "I just wanted to say thanks for this morning." She put her hand on her lunchbox and smiled. "It was a very sweet gesture, and I appreciate it."
Minato's smile twisted into a look of confusion, and he looked away for a moment to try and recall what he could have done that was helpful to Mitsuru. His memory brought him to the night before, and their mission to Tartarus. He'd given her the rapier they had found in the strange chest after finishing off a swarm of Mayas. Perhaps that was it, though he swore she thanked him already. "It's no trouble. You need good equipment inside of Tartarus, right?"
"Right." She smiled, then did a double take. No. Not right. How does a lunch help with Tartarus? Usually a good dinner... Her heart sunk as Minato waved to her and walked out the door. It was getting late and the boy didn't want to be tardy for homeroom. She was all alone, flustered and confused.
"HEY SENPAI!" Junpei literally jumped down the last couple of stairs with his seemingly endless energy, twisting his ball cap and smiling at Mitsuru. "It's Saturday, and you know what that means! The weekend is almost upon us! Time to sleep in, goof off and relax!"
No. No way Junpei made the lunch. She just couldn't fathom it. He'd have to wake up early to even make it, and it was so neatly arranged and well-cooked...Junpei considered anything more than instant ramen not worth the work. Unless...
"Iori, I'm impressed." She tested the water. "I didn't think you had it in you."
"Oh?"
"I saw it this morning, and it brightened my day. I don't know what to say."
"Huh?! You saw it?! But nobody was supposed to see it!"
"What?"
"That drawing was for Chidori! I spent all night drawing it!" He clenched his books and bent over in front of Mitsuru. "PLEASE don't tell her what it is! I want it to be a surprise!"
"O-okay, Iori. I won't." She sighed, watching him race out the door. She rubbed at her face, standing there in complete confusion. "Then...?"
As Junpei left, Koromaru burst between the doors and emerged into the commons area, tail wagging happily as he was followed by Shinjiro. Once in the door, Shinji knelt down and unleashed the dog, giving it a gentle pat as it raced off to its food dishes. Mitsuru matched glances with Shinji's tired eyes as he stood up and approached her slowly. His eyes scanned over the bento box, and then rested on her as he idly wound the leash around his hand. "Better hurry." He warned.
Mitsuru turned bright red, and raced for the door, looking in a panic. The door shut behind her, and Shinji smiled lightly. He could never bring himself to express affection verbally. So instead, he'd be creative. She'll figure it out in due time.
