Title: Best Result of Good Intentions

Summary: And then there were wet blankets.
A/N: Life got hectic, and posting dates were missed - this one's for June 10th.
"There are," said Seregil, "a few parts of your performance this afternoon I'd like to comment on."
Alec sighed and nodded, mentally bracing himself for a scolding. He really hadn't meant to push Seregil into the pond, although he felt even Seregil couldn't argue with the most important result (that was to say: the rather incriminating note that Seregil had been carrying in his pocket getting soaked and being reduced to a wet wad of paper that could have been anything).
Perhaps, all in all, it would be more correct to say he had meant to push Seregil into the pond; he just hadn't done so with the intention of well, pushing Seregil into the pond.
Safe to talk? he signed.
"Given that you seemed to consider it perfectly safe for me to get soaked to the skin, yes, I'd say so," Seregil huffed. "Besides, the so-called 'merchant' and his guards left hours ago." The sad look at Seregil's still-soaked garments that had been hung on a rack in front of the fire to dry implied that if it hadn't been for the incident with the pond, the two of them would be hot on the trail, instead of stuck here.
"You said you didn't want to get involved," Alec reminded Seregil. "A nice, safe trip, just to buy some supplies."
"I'd forgotten that 'nice and safe' is just another word for 'boring'," Seregil grumbled. "Besides, skills tend to get rusty if you don't practice them every now and then."
"Well, I'm sorry to hear you've felt the past few weeks have been 'boring'," Alec said a little tartly. He'd been enjoying himself, actually - Seregil seemed to possess a near-endless supply of stories and anecdotes about the places they'd passed thus far, and the fact that there was no all-important mission to fulfill meant they'd been traveling at a pleasant, leisurely pace.
It also didn't hurt that Seregil's inventiveness seemed to be as endless as his supply of stories, and this trip seemed to fuel his imagination in a way their peaceful existence at the cabin had not. Alec couldn't say he'd been bored in either place, but he felt that these past days, their relationship had slipped back into the pattern of mentor and student again a little, the way it had been during those weeks after he'd first met Seregil. He didn't mind, exactly, only he wondered sometimes if Seregil noticed.
"Tali, you know that wasn't what I meant." Seregil's expression mollified.
"It sounded like that was what you meant," Alec said softly, walking over to where Seregil was sitting and placing his hands on Seregil's shoulders. "It sounded like you were saying I was boring you."
Seregil's eyes widened slightly, then he shook his head and chuckled. "You almost had me apologizing for letting you push me into a pond, there."
"Almost?" Alec demanded indignantly, removing his hands and taking a step back.
Seregil shrugged. "You could no more convince me you honestly believe I'd ever get bored with you than, well, than I'd ever stop finding your company anything but boring. You could probably have convinced anyone else, though."
Alec sighed. "I'm sorry I pushed you into the pond."
"How sorry?"
Alec raised one eyebrow.
Seregil grinned at him. "We're stuck here at least until my clothes have dried," he pointed out. "We might as well find something to do to pass the time."
"I'm open for suggestions," Alec said.
"I'm delighted to hear that." Seregil's eyes twinkled. "You can apologize to me by finding out where that merchant and his merry band of men went from here, and how we can catch up with them over the course of next week."
Alec smiled, feeling smug. "I already know."
"You - " Seregil opened his mouth, closed it again. Laughed. "Have I told you lately how much I love you?"
"Words, words," Alec said. "After being accused of being boring, I think I'd like to see some actual ... proof."
"Well, then, I'll do my best to provide some."
