Title: Musings on a Relationship

Rating: PG
Warnings: n/a
Prompt: Final Fantasy VIII, Squall/Rinoa: unexpected gentleness - here's to strength yet to be found.
Word count: 383
Rinoa was never afraid when she was with Squall. He was quiet but where others may have seen aloofness she saw a strength that drew her to him. She didn't want to change his personality but she did, on occasion, try to liven him up more - and it was so nice when he did smile at her, even if it didn't quite sit right on his face.
When they made love for the first time she was surprised at his gentle touch. It wasn't hesitant but it was tender and it made her melt completely.
She was happy when she was with him. He was so different to Seifer. The tall blond had been so passionate about everything; he had worn his strength boldly, his manner upfront and confronting. With Squall, that attitude had to be coaxed and it could be a struggle but Rinoa didn't get frustrated. She tackled it all with enthusiasm. She hugged him and laughed, always hoping for some answering laughter. She enjoyed the times he did break out and form whole sentences, though around others he still did tend to clam up and withdraw within himself.
He was such a brave and fine fighter that it continued to surprise her when they were alone and he held her with those gentle hands. He gripped her so differently than the way he gripped his gunblade. But underneath it all she knew there was so many things she had yet to discover. She wanted to find all those hidden places; all those strengths as well as the weaknesses he mentally tried so hard to protect.
She wouldn't give up. She'd never give up on him, she told herself. She just hoped he wouldn't give up on her either. It did concern her mildly but she filed it away in the back of her mind and didn't let it bother her. If something happened, she'd deal with it at that time and not before. There was no point in worrying about things that may never happen.
Best to remain optimistic.
She wanted to take him dancing again. It made her feel free and she hoped he also felt that freedom. The plan decided, she smiled brightly as she clasped Squall's hands and led him to their future of discovery together.
