Prompt: Black Butler, Sebastian/Ciel: powerplay - Who gives the orders, and who's really in control?
Word count: 424
Don't pay the ferryman until you have reached your destination. This was a tale that Ciel had heard long ago and like that fabled ferryman, Sebastian was leading Ciel on a journey; a journey heading to death but along the way it was Ciel Phantomhive who was in control.
Or so he wanted to believe.
Under contract, the demon butler had to do Ciel's bidding and protect him when he was ordered to. The contract was binding but had an expiry date and Ciel wasn't entirely sure when that would be; he wasn't sure when the ferryman guiding him over the Styx would demand his payment but when he was where he should be that price must be paid.
He'd known the costs up front but it no less pained him. Death did not frighten him; he was only concerned with his loss of power. Now it was Sebastian under his thumb but when the roles were reversed.... what then? Though sometimes he wondered how much control he really had now. Testing those waters was a dangerous idea. However, Ciel was not one to back away from a challenge.
Tea.
Of course Sebastian always made an impeccable cup of tea, always as Ciel liked it. What didn't Sebastian do for him? Anything he hadn't yet done, Ciel was positive that he merely had to ask and Sebastian would oblige with his customary 'Yes, my Lord'. A game of chess; dinner cooked to perfection. All were too easy. What could he ask that would make Sebastian balk? There was the real test.
Until such time as the contract was fulfilled, Sebastian was Ciel's to command. Such power could only be contained for so long and Ciel knew he was treading on thin ice when he decided to make a list. Menial tasks, mostly, to see how far Sebastian would go for him. Nothing seemed to phase the butler and it relaxed Ciel again. He had what he needed; all he needed. He knew his life would be short but he would reach his goals.
There would be consequences to be paid afterwards but what was a soul? What could Sebastian do with such an immaterial thing? It didn't do any good to imagine the possibilities there, Ciel thought, and so for now, he didn't.
He carefully watched Sebastian. Always.
Any little slip up that could make the contract null and void had to be noted. If Ciel could keep his control even after that, then that would ultimately decide the winner in this devilish game.
