Title: Defeat
Author: Akiko
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Word count: 375
Prompt: Final Fantasy XII, Balthier/Fran: bets - "Do not pretend you have no memory of our bet, Balthier."
Summary: Fran convinces Balthier to concede defeat in a bet.
A rustle of cloth came from across the room, but Balthier only stared at the ceiling. He didn't turn his head when he heard the thump of leather hitting the floor of their room in the inn.
He heard Fran sigh. "Do not pretend you have no memory of our bet, Balthier."
He sat up at that and faced her. Her armor was in a pile at the foot of the bed, and she wore a plain tunic and trousers. "I could never forget a bet placed, not with such delightful terms on its outcome." It had been such a sure wager. There was no chance that Vaan could defeat the antlion on his own. He hadn't, technically.
"I won. You will do my bidding until this time tomorrow, as we agreed." Fran crossed her arms.
Balthier raised an eyebrow. "You cheated."
"I did no such thing."
Balthier said, "Assisting the object of our bet to turn the outcome in your favor is hardly sporting."
Fran gazed at him levelly. "I did not want him to be killed in the service of our fun."
"So you cast Haste and Berserk, and sent him on his merry way. You don't think that's cheating, even in the slightest?" He'd grown accustomed to the differences between humans and Viera, but sometimes Fran still surprised him.
"Vaan defeated the antlion on his own." Fran's eyes hardened into the stubborn set he knew as well as he knew the soft curve of her back.
Balthier knew he was defeated, but he argued on, as stubborn as she was. "He defeated the antlion with your help."
"I did not participate in the battle. He did it alone." She took two long steps across the room and stood beside him, shin to shin. "The first task I ask of you is to clean my armor." She leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. "I believe you will find the second task more agreeable, not to mention in accordance with your plans for victory."
That was a defeat he could live with. "As you will, my lady." Balthier stood up and pulled the cleaning tools from his bag. "But if you win our next bet on such a technicality, I shan't acquiesce this easily."
