Summary: Sometimes this was all she needed to keep her from snapping.

Garnet slowly closed the door to her room and sighed. The evening’s council meeting had run late again, and she’d had to stay after to calm down a few of the more excitable members of her court who were not happy about the inclusion of any sort of new tax, even if they’d barely notice the extra handful of coins each year. There were days she wasn’t sure whether the complexities of Alexandria’s government and policies were there to preserve justice and liberty, or to protect the nobility from the consequences of their actions. After the fifth time she’d had to explain to one particularly idiotic baroness why doubling the number of balls and parties in the castle each season was a bad idea – there was only so much in the royal treasury, after all, and better things to spend it on than frivolous parties – the normally even-tempered queen had wanted to break something against the wall. The woman’s cotton fluff-filled head, for preference. Add to that all the other nonsense about the budget, and the feuds between the courtiers and the repairs to the north tower complex and the fact that three weeks’ worth of morning sickness and mood swings had left her more than a little drained, and Garnet had begun to think longingly of putting a torch to the massive piles of paperwork and petitions and heavens only knew what else. She leaned her forehead against the cool stone of the wall, letting her long, dark hair fall over her shoulders like a veil, and closed her eyes. She read in stories of people who went to incredible lengths to seize a throne, to rule a kingdom, and she’d always wondered why they bothered. Most of the time it was more trouble than it was worth, as far as she was concerned.

A gentle touch on the back of her neck drew her out of her thoughts, and she reached back, fingers closing over her husband’s hand. Over the past several weeks the only thing that had kept her from calling down Bahamut on the whole damned court had been the fact that she could come up to her chambers at the end of the day and rant and rave and be incoherent at him, could get mad and noisy enough that her courtiers wouldn’t recognize the calm, demure lady she usually acted like, and Zidane would listen to her and then make stupid jokes to get her to laugh at how brainless her court could be, instead of be angry about them.
“Long day at work?” he asked with a kind of tired humor in his voice. She laughed, exasperated and just a little bitter.
“They’re all insane,” she groaned, leaning back into his touch. “Remind me again why I’m not supposed to just have Leviathan wash the whole lot of them out to sea and start over with new ones that actually have minds?”
“’Cause you’d enjoy it too much, that’s why.” She gave him a skeptical look.
“And why would that be a bad thing?”
“Because then when that bunch starts getting stupid, you’ll want to do the same thing again. And I don’t think you’d want to go down in history as a murderous tyrant, right?” She blinked, and then laughed.
“Sometimes I almost hate that you know me so well, do you know that?”
“I guess I should count myself lucky it’s only ‘almost’, then.” He kissed her cheek and lifted her easily off her feet. “Come on, everything’s gonna look a little less stupid after you get some sleep.”
“Hopefully it’ll be for more than a few hours this time,” she murmured, pressing her face against his neck. She felt more than saw him make a sour face as he set her down.
“Gods, am I glad it’s girls that have the babies. I wouldn’t have the patience for it.”
“I’m fairly sure you’d be right on that count,” she said with a tired little laugh, pulling him down onto the pillow next to her. He shifted slightly, tucking one arm underneath her head and threading his fingers through her hair, and she sighed happily. “This is always the best part of the day,” she said softly, and he smiled and kissed her temple.
“Got that right.”
