Summary: For July 1st prompt #40 -- Aeris/Belle/Tifa: Heroic Gesture - "Here, we'll stand, and none shall overcome us."
A/N: I'm writing this while (quite literally) in the middle of moving from my wonderful job at Disneyworld onto a new phase of my life. I wanted to capture a little of the magic of the parks in this story, for the plot device and for myself. If you want more information about the thing they're looking for, you might want to check out www.hiddenmickeys.org. (Also, sorry about the formatting-- I'm working on an old computer with only wordpad on it. I'll update the format when I get to my spiffy machine again)
Aeris slammed the door shut and backed away from it slowly.
"It's in here somewhere-- if what Queen Minnie told me holds true. It shouldn't be anywhere *truly* hidden, just worked into something where it's not immediately obvious."
"I'll hold the door when they finally make it through," Tifa said, her voice all business and not a bit out of breath, even with the fighting she'd been doing, "Aeris, Belle, the two of you concentrate on looking around," Tifa moved up to the doorway. Heartless weren't phased by typical doors but here, in the heart of Radiant Garden, many of the doors had been fortified to provide temporary safety from the Heartless-- at least until their almost hive mind figured out they could phase up through the floor. Unfortunately, temporary safety wasn't enough anymore. The Heartless had separated the three of them from the rest of their friends and they weren't yet sure if anyone knew there even were Heartless here again, much less that the three of them were fighting them. It was enough to make an ordinary girl despair, but none of the three of them were particularly ordinary and Tifa had fought against worse odds than this and come out the other end still standing. Still, she was getting tired and she knew that they couldn't really count on the battle prowess of the other two.
Belle started to make a slow once over of the room, looking high and low, feet carrying her in a dance-like fashion across the floor,
"If it's in plain sight, then why do they call it 'hidden'?" Aeris shrugged, not stopping in her own search,
"They're supposedly hidden in plain sight. They're obvious once you know where to look, but you can easily miss them if you're not looking. Queen Minnie said that was so invaders wouldn't know where they were to attack them-- but they could be found in a pinch, like we're doing," Aeris moved to the carpet, letting Belle look over the books, since she seemed to have a natural affinity for them.
"So what happens when we find this thing?" Tifa never took her own eyes off the door, body still loosely held in a fighting stance, "How do we make it work?"
"Well..." Aeris did pause in her search a moment, looking over at Tifa's back with hesitant eyes, "We perform what amounts to a kind of Trinity. Only instead of using the power of friendship, it uses the power of our hearts, with a Princess to activate it instead of a keyblade. Queen Minnie didn't say much about how it worked, but it uses our hearts to power Radiant Garden's defenses," maybe Tifa wouldn't pick up on her small amount of reluctance and she wouldn't have to--
"Wait," Tifa did actually turn her head this time, "we power this with our hearts? Then what happens to us?" Aeris put her hands behind her back and rocked back and forth on her heels for a moment. Ordinarily, the movement made Tifa smile a little-- it made Aeris look so young. Now, though, she was too busy fighting down a rising sense of alarm.
"Well... I'm not sure. I think we'll probably be in some kind of suspended animation?" she winced a little, aware of how unsure she suddenly sounded, "I'm sure it will be alright, the defenses were designed for a single Princess of Heart to use and even though I'm not a Princess, I'm hardly ordinary myself. I'm sure it's dangerous, but you don't design a defense system that kills the defenders!" Tifa sighed slightly and turned back around to face the door
"Just for the record? I don't much care for this plan," the first Heartless coming up through the floor near the door was almost a welcome distraction, "Can you look a little faster, here? The door's not going to stop them much longer." Belle and Aeris re-doubled their efforts to find the mark they were seeking, but Tifa was getting steadily pushed towards the back of the room by the oncoming Heartless in a matter of minutes, "I'm not going to be able to hold them much longer..." Tifa glanced over her shoulder to see how they were faring and saw one had slipped past her guard and was moving in towards Belle. There was no way she was going to be able to make it to it in time, and for a moment, Tifa felt the icy touch of despair in her heart, "Princess! Look out behind you!"
She needn't have worried.
Belle whipped around from her search of the fireplace with a poker in her hand, slashing down through the Heartless with what looked suspiciously like a practiced flick of her wrist. The Heartless turned into black, fading specks and Belle looked a little sheepishly up at Tifa,
"I never did feel very much like a princess," she said, apologetically, though the impish grin creeping the corners of her lips up made the apology a little suspect. Despite the pressing danger, Tifa couldn't help but grin back a moment.
"Over here! I found it!" the other two girls turned towards Aeris who was standing at the end of a bookcase. Worked into the knots of wood on the side was a little mark-- a large circle with two smaller circles connected to it at the top right and left, the whole thing no more than an inch and a half wide.
"It does kind of look like the King," Belle said, a smile lighting her face, moving to take Aeris' place beside it, "So I just touch it, and you two hold my hand and I wish, right?" Aeris nodded,
"That's how it's supposed to work, anyway." Belle placed her hand over the mark reverently and then turned and held out her hand to the other two.
"I still think this is a bad idea," Tifa said, shaking her head as she stepped back towards them, another Heartless disintegrating around her fist, "But I don't have any others."
"Don't worry," Belle said with a small smile, "We'll be fine, I'm sure of it. Aeris is right-- what's the point in having a defense system that harms it's defenders? Sora or one of our other friends will find us soon. All we have to do is believe." Tifa smiled at Belle and shook her head in wonder, adding her hand to Belle's
"You're sure you don't feel like a Princess, Belle?" Belle laughed, a little embarrassed,
"Well, that's just being an optimist."
"Don't worry so much, Tifa," Aeris added her hand, giving Tifa's a squeeze, "We'll save everyone and come back to tell the tale, just like always". Tifa nodded once, the despair from earlier replaced with determination, eyes locked with Aeris' as Belle closed hers, looking into her heart,
"I believe you."
