Prompt: March 12th: D.Gray-man, Kanda/Allen/Lavi: seashore - "salt on his tongue and the seas in his eyes."
Summary: A day at the beach.
A/N: Actually got this out on time, though it didn't turn out exactly as I thought it would (also my first springkink request fill :3). Ah well. Not exactly beta'd

“You’re crazy.”

It had started like all things did: A dare between friends.

“You’re insane.”

A dare between friends that never got completed in the first place, but it still counted, right?

“No—you aren’t insane, you’re senile.”

But once it got started it never stopped, which is why it never got finished because there was no ending.

“Get used to it.”

“And of course you side with him.” He had no idea how this happened. Why he was dragged into this. In fact, he was pretty sure on a scale from one to ten he didn’t want to know. “Why do you side with him—you don’t even like people.”

Kanda frowned. He was a frowner, all right, always had been always will be, “Che, because.”

As if that explained everything.

As if Ghandi set himself on fire just feel himself burn.

As if that was offlimits-when-it-wasn’t—and he didn’t need a damn history lessons so he kept his mouth shut.

Mostly.

Why are we doing this again?”

“You’re a Freshman. Shut up.”

“Yeah, so? It looks like I’ve got more common sense than either of you!” Because he did, or so he’d like to inflate his ego a bit (sue him. Go ahead. He expects it).

“Che, you’re young.”

“It’s a once in a lifetime experience!” Red hair flaming, turning on heels and smiling—not laughing like he had been for the past half hour.

Kanda froze.

Allen froze.

They stared for good measure, and Lavi laughed again, “Y’don’t get it, do ya sprout? How’s the saying go? “the older you get the wiser you are, the younger you are the more foolish”.” Except Allen wasn’t quite sure it went that way. Not that it mattered much—it didn’t to Lavi, and Lavi was oh-so-knoweldgeable

Oh so very much.

“Right.” A pause, “And the name’s Allen.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Which is how they wound up at the beach.

Which was really beyond him, but Allen guessed he’d asked enough questions already. Enough to get tossed out of the car twice, and threatened a third time because woe-be-tide Kanda was the one driving.

Of course it was Kanda. With Lavi’s depth perception, Allen didn’t have a death wish. Never wanted one—not yet. Too young to die, and all.

Which is how they wound up at the beach.

“It’s all part of the plan, Bean!”

Allen.”

“Y’gotta go with the tide—feel the sand between your toes, y’get?”

“No I don’t but—does it matter?”

He had literally been dragged from the car. Though he was curious. Kanda was complying and that in and of itself was unusual. What grand happenings happened at a public-private beach so late in the afternoon? Lavi had a blanket—oh—a picnic?—a few other objects—lotion—were they going swimming? He wasn’t sure.

Kanda had his hair down for once, as they sat—krnch, krnch—on the sand. Footsteps sinking in, getting sand in their shoes.

“Idn’t it great?” A giggling laughing Lavi.

A scowling silent Kanda.

A confused and convoluted Allen.

It all made sense didn’t it? No. No it didn’t.

“What’s great? It’s just the beach?” Which with it being only a less-than-hour-drive-away meant that constant school skipping to go to the beach trips happened way too frequently. Even when the weather wasn’t so nice.

“That’s what ya don’t get Mo-ya-shi.” Kanda scowled at the stolen nickname, “But Ka-n-da gets it, Right? Right Yuu-chan? Mon ami?”

“No.” Silence, “Che, fine. It was your idea.” Wasn’t it always? Allen frowned a little, Kanda frowned harder, “Just—follow along. Shit—you’re crazy.”

The first objection.

“But you’re still here.”

As if that explained everything.

Maybe it did.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * **

It ended with sand in weird places, with laughter, with—making lopsided sandcastles and Lavi trying to be creative—trying to goad Kanda—“Show off your daddy’s special talent!”—even if they weren’t related by blood.

Allen still maintained they were lunatics, even Kanda was borderline but opposite. Not that he figured he’d even do this but—

Well.

Did it matter when it started a sandball fight? Something that required blocking your eyes and blocking a wad of wet-but-not-too-wet sand hurling at you from—Kanda of all people. Of all people.

And the ocean roaring.

And the sun setting.

And sand in really weird places.

“You’re crazy.” Allen stared up at the darkening sky, lips threatening a smile—Lavi’s was already a mile wide. He always had to beat them, didn’t he? All grand objectives and silent schemes and –“Oh let’s go to the beach!”—it was almost night time now. Allen tossed his arm across his eyes and sighed, “Why did you bring me here?”

The crunch of sand, laughter too close to his ear and—he didn’t move his arm fast enough, but it was caught for him, in a soft grip, wrapping around his wrist. They saw the scars—they had known (regrettably) what they were from. Kanda was frowning, and Lavi was smiling down at him—chuckling again and –whispering—

“Be-cause Mo-ya-shi,” He didn’t get a chance to stiffen either when a chaste kiss landed on his nose, and a second later, his lips. He figured he shouldn’t mind as much—but— “You’re cute.”

“I’m not cute!”

Lavi laughed harder. Kanda looked like he had half the mind to get up and leave, but he didn’t. Lavi leaned back—Kanda was there—there—there—whapping him on the back of the head with his hand.

Lavi yelped, “What was that for?!”

Like Kanda would actually give an answer. Allen sat up and watched—watched as Lavi leaned back again, and smiled—smiled and reached out—“Neh—Allen!”

Allen didn’t comply. Or he’d rather not—really. But the way Kanda was complying with the leaning-on and the fact that Lavi was smiling like an idiot--

“You’re the one that’s cute.” He said it with laughter, and he was sure the words just—slipped out. Unintentional as it was.

Lavi looked horrified. Kanda snorted. Allen laughed.

“No m’not!” A protest, loud above crashing waves on a beach they had dragged him to—just because.

“Yeah—you are, right—Kan-da?”

Kanda shrugged, but didn’t say no.

And Lavi? Just protested louder—until even Kanda’s grip was too easily brushed aside, and Allen knew it’d be in his best interest to –runrunrun.

He didn’t run fast enough.

He never did like the taste of salt water, but then—who did?—he was tackled into the stinging cold salty (of course) water without a second thought, clothes saturated, the flow tugging back and forth at the sand between his toes.

Now Lavi laughed—laughed as he sputtered—laughed at his pain so to speak.

“Neh, neh, All-en!~” And decide that personal space was nonexistent—then what was that kiss earlier? Allen shoved that thought away—with a certain redhead pressed against his back, “The—ocean,” whispering in his ear, “Reminds me of you, y’know? In your eyes—I can see sometimes an’—I just had ta bring ya here.”

Allen frowned—he heard the splashing—saw Kanda walk up behind them.

“You suck at being poetic, Lavi.”

Kanda dunked them both in the next moment.

Well—

“Neh, I know—but at least I try, right?~”

Lavi--oh, Lavi. I was torn between wanting to bop him on the head, smack his ass, or smother him between my bewbz in a massive hug. So kyuuuutte~ xD

I also love how Kanda was just--going along with it. And the line, "Kanda shrugged, but didn’t say no."--that. I just--loved that. For some reason. x3

I simply adore how you write Allen--as you well know. He just seems so--I...don't know the word. But reading him like this is just...calming? Comfortable? I dunno, really--but I love it. :3

All in all--this entire ficcie was great. I was smiling the whole way through~ x3
