Summary: Tenpou and Konzen share an intimate moment together.

Pillow Talk
From Tenpou’s perspective lying in Konzen’s bed, the way Konzen’s golden hair spills over the pillow resembles rays radiating from a luminous star. With his hair spread out like that, he really does look like the sun, as Goku continually tells him he does. His eyelids are half-closed, his cheeks bear a faint but distinct blush, and he looks nearly dazed.

“Your stunned silence is very reassuring, Konzen,” Tenpou says.

Violet eyes snap open as Konzen turns to look at him. He opens his mouth, lips still kiss-swollen. At first, no sound comes out, then, after a few seconds of gasping for air like a fish out of water, he chokes out, “You surprised me.”

Tenpou rolls over on his side and rests his head on his left forearm. He gazes steadily at his friend of many years. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time, but I didn’t think you’d appreciate it. Taking care of Goku has changed you.”

“What does taking care of Goku has to do with that?” Konzen asks indignantly.

“You’re more relaxed. You’re happier.”

He can see Konzen tensing up and considering his words, then shrugging them off. “He’s a handful. I don’t know how you can say I’m more relaxed or happier.”

Tenpou laughs. “I’ve overheard you humming a tune while you’re working. You never used to do that. And you smile more.” He hesitates, then continues, “You’re more beautiful now than you were before. Fatherhood suits you.”

Konzen’s eyes flash. “I am not that brat’s father!” He’s also not pleased that Tenpou has called him ‘beautiful’; that’s a term he’s only ever heard applied to women.

Tenpou smiles at him enigmatically. “Then what are you?”

“His guardian.”

Tenpou rolls onto his back again because his arm is starting to go numb from propping up his head. He wonders if his head feels so heavy because it overflows with random trivia and stray thoughts, just as his room overflows with books and trinkets he picked up in the Lower Realm.

Konzen leans over and kisses him hesitantly, his ardor increasing as the kiss continues. Tenpou is relieved that Konzen reciprocates his feelings enough to have allowed him this liberty.

As the living, breathing ice sculpture called Konzen Douji continues to melt into his mouth, Tenpou is surprised, but gratified, to note that he doesn’t flinch at tasting his spend on Tenpou’s tongue.

Yup, because it's Gaiden. Whatever happiness they find will ultimately end with their passing. Their time together, all four of them, is too short. I can never get over it. Silly huh.

I knew it was you!

This brings up a question I've had: Do we even know how old they are? People must age, because Li Touten and the Jade Emperor look older, but they don't die of natural causes, right?

Anyway, it's not silly, but the way I look at it, they don't experience a lot of happiness in the manga, other than getting to know Goku, so any additional happiness we can give them through fanfiction is a blessing.

Aww, Konzen, you softie! Hehe, he can call it whatever he likes, of course but, being a guardian and a parent is the same damned thing (biology having nothing to do with it). I can just see Tenpou grinning knowingly in his own head. ^_^ Cute. I so need a Konzen/Tenpou icon :(

Konzen isn't quite as colorful as Sanzo or as snarky, and probably not as funny (whether intentionally or not), but I like Konzen more unreservedly than Sanzo.

I agree with you, though, about the parent/guardian thing; it's one of his forms of denial. He might have answered differently later on; I was thinking of this as taking place in that in-between time before Li Touten ordered Nataku to attack Goku, when they enjoyed a few moments of peace and contentment. Tenpou probably was laughing to himself about Konzen's denial. XD

I felt lucky to run across the TenKon icon I used sometime after I picked up the prompts, since I knew I'd need it. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Nice fic! It was kind of bittersweet - because we all know what happens to Konzen and Tenpou in the end T__T

Hmm, to me a guardian sounds like a closer connection than a parent - after all, parents can be neglectful, but a guardian is more responsible. I guess Konzen doesn't see it this way.

Thank you, and you're welcome. You're not the first to say that anything having to do with Gaiden is bittersweet because of what happens to them eventually, and you have company regarding the last sentence as well.

Although being a guardian is something one volunteers for (though it's more like Kanzeon volunteered Konzen at first), I guess my legal background makes me see it as a more remote connection than a biological one would be. Oftentimes guardians, especially in novels, are guardians in name only, especially if they're relatives who have 'inherited' children after their parents' death.

Hmm, that's right, it wasn't like taking care of Goku was Konzen's choice. But I really liked that Tenpou notices what positive effect Goku had on Konzen's behaviour :D

Thanks! I don't remember this prompt from last time around, when I picked up a Gojyo/Hakkai prompt; then again, I had barely read any of Gaiden by then, so I probably didn't pay much attention to the Gaiden prompts. I'm glad you liked the story.

This was cozy and charming.

Didn't expect the pillow talk to be about Goku, but it shows how Goku's presence has changed Konzen and made him a little more open, even if he denies it. Good on ya, Tenpou for calling him out. :)

*laughs* Well, sometimes the story is as much about me making a point about the characters as it is about the characters making a point about themselves, and for me, Goku was the cause of Konzen's coming out of his shell. I think Tenpou would pick up on that, and in the context of the story, see it as what made it possible for him to approach Konzen sexually without as much fear of rejection due to Konzen's sense of propriety as he would have had before this.

I had to do something with that beautiful hair of his! I guess I have something of a hair fetish too, especially when it's as beautiful (and as long) as Konzen's.
