Warnings: None.
Word count: 408
Prompt: xxxHOLiC, Doumeki/Himawari: sleepless nights - sometimes (not so often anymore) they think of him
A/N: Originally for July 15th. Sorry for the lateness!
The sound of shattering glass echoes across her dream; she is still hearing it as she jerks awake, struggling away from the warm body next to her, terrified of herself, of helplessly causing harm and the kind look in his eyes when he said he was lucky to have met her.
"Relax," she recognizes the voice, deep and even and just as soothing as it had been when they were teenagers and she would think, If Doumeki-kun is here, it's all right.
"I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"
"No. You were only asleep for a few minutes," he says lightly and pulls her back against him. She presses her back against his chest, lets go of the tension in her muscles as he drapes an arm over her waist.
"I dreamt about Watanuki-kun," she says to the darkness in front of her, "about the time he fell because of me."
Her holds her closer, and the feel of hair and skin against her scars -his scars - is both comforting and painful in a way she's never been able to explain properly. She's never really needed to though, because Shizuka always understood, even if she didn't say anything.
Watanuki is and has always been the greatest source of shared pain between them.
"It's been a long time, hasn't it?" She asks and her voice only shakes a little, "I haven't had that dream since before we were married."
She feels him nod, and twines her fingers with his.
"Is it okay? To talk about it?" She's mostly sure of the answer but she knows it's a little harder for him, because Shizuka had always done his best to protect Watanuki. When it came time, not even the egg Yuuko had given him had been able to keep Watanuki close to them. It's a burden she's always felt guilty for being happy she didn't have to bear.
"Yeah."
She sighs, "I said that but now I don't know where to begin..."
"He was an idiot."
She laughs, turning just enough so she could look at him, "He was, sometimes, wasn't he?" She whispers, "I wish he was here now." It hurts but it's an old familiar hurt.
"So do I."
She squeezes his hand gently, "Let's start at the beginning."
"He was an idiot."
She laughs again, honey warm and comfortable in the darkness and Shizuka's arms, ready to fill the night with laughter and tears and remember whens.
