“Feeding time, that's our chance!”
Cloud clumped against the glass wall of the tube, distressingly inanimate even as the mako drained away. Zack caught him as the tube opened and Cloud began to topple to the floor.
“Easy there, Cloud, you’re alright.” He lowered Cloud to the ground softly as Cloud’s body shivered and he began to cough up mako trapped in his lungs. The coughs were weak, though, and quickly subsided. He would not move to Zack’s prompting, his eyes remained open and blank.
Zack heard footsteps and shouting moving towards them. He cursed, lifted Cloud up, and ran.
They’d been walking for so long. Zack had tried to keep track of the days at first, but had lost count. Cloud was barely responsive; moments of lucidity were followed by days of nothing at all.
Zack was tired.
The sun had set. They had taken shelter for the night, and from the rain, in a hayloft on a chocobo farm, unbeknownst to the farm owner. Cloud had been completely unresponsive, only taking water and some broth for the past ten days now, the longest stretch yet. Zack was trying hard not to think about what that could mean.
Zack stretched out in the hay, placing Cloud against the wall and using his body as a buffer between Cloud and what could come from behind him. They’d have to be up early in the morning to miss the farmers when they came in. Zack wrapped an arm around Cloud in case he came to in the night and tried to wander off, and fell asleep.
When he woke up again it was still dark, still raining, and Cloud was shaking in his arms. Zack pulled back to look at him.
Cloud’s eyes were closed, and he was trembling as if he were in the grips of a terrible nightmare. Zack swore. This happened sometimes, but all he could do was watch and hope that the fits ended quickly.
Cloud’s mouth clenched together and he began to whimper as he rolled away from Zack onto his back, his eyes still shut. This was bad. Zack reached out a hand to try to comfort him, to pull him back in. His hand brushed Cloud’s shoulder.
And then Cloud’s eyes were open and he was screaming and Zack was fighting the urge to do the same. Cloud’s pupils were slit, his normal blue almost glowing the darkness of the barn. Zack had seen eyes like that only once before, but never on Cloud and- god, what had they done to him in the labs? It was like-
like something not human
Zack shook his head,
NO
and clapped his hands over Cloud’s mouth to stifle the noise that might send the farmer’s running to investigate.
Cloud’s hands were clawing at him, were scratching his face, were scratching at the wood paneling, were coming away red. He was tossing his head, he was arching under Zack’s body as he pinned him to the ground to keep him from trashing too badly, he was-
And then the fit was over, and he stilled as his eyes fluttered softly closed again. Zack collapsed onto the hay next to him, and pulled Cloud in close to him, holding him.
Zack did not go back to sleep that night but shook for a long time, holding Cloud’s innate body close and blaming any wetness on his cheeks on a leaky roof.
In the morning they were gone.
