Prompt: Count Cain/Godchild, Cain/Riff: Desire-- "You cause in me an impossible craving that cannot be denied. If I decided to make you my religion, I think God would be kind.
Warning(s): Angst, weird writing style, heavy, heavy spoilers for the end of the manga.
Notes: Probably not what you were thinking of - sorry. But as I said before, I really find the other aspects of their relationship more interesting than smut.Writing this hurt.
...
Ultimately, it was only inevitable that they’d end up like this: clasping each other tightly as the building surrounding them crumbles - a once strong foundation rapidly turning into debris and dust.
Soon, this building will be nothing but a memory that will, eventually, cease to be.
(Just like humans - who from ashes born to ashes return. Only few are glorious enough to rise from the ashes and turn into legends).
Riff’s hands are becoming colder and colder, skin rotting and turning into bones (a dead man walking, once freed from the chains imprisoning him, can’t hope to remain whole - now, liberated, he can only rest in peace).
Soon, Riff will be nothing more than a mere heap of bones - a thing that once was, but is no more. Doomed to be forgotten.
(Because who ever remembers the butler?)
But Cain doesn’t let go of Riff - he won’t. Because, even if Riff was another of his father’s pawns (a puppet to bend this way and that way, only to be discarded once no longer needed), Cain knows that he’ll never let this man slip away from his grasp again.
Because, even if no one else remembers Riff, Cain knows that - if he let go now, if simply left - he’d never forget him; Riff has branded himself into his heart and, just like the scars on his back, he’ll never fade away.
And the memories of Riff-
(would haunt him day and night - plaque him and slowly send him to death: it would be a death bitterer than any poison in his precious collection and ghastlier than any nightmare).
So Cain refuses to let go. Because he needs Riff, because without Riff, life is meaningless. It’s as simple as that.
You promised me to stay by my side forever, Riff.
I did - and I’ll not go back on my words.
“Riff,” Cain whispers and holds even more tightly, his eyesight slowly fading away - it’s getting harder to breathe. Everything is turning darker, gradually darker until it’s black.
Don’t let go of me.
I won’t. I’ll follow you into hell or wherever else you’ll go ... Cain .
(This the stuff legends are made out of).

Date: 2010-08-20 07:21 pm (UTC)But, maybe it's because I re-read the manga recently, and the ending imprinted itself into my mind so vividly that my brain obviously connected the prompt with angst ... rather than what you had in mind.
I really am glad, though, that you think it's /them/. They aren't exactly easy to write, the relationship and the characters themselves being quite complex (but that's what makes it beautiful, I think?).

Date: 2010-08-20 07:24 pm (UTC)I probably had this reaction (or something very similar to it) when reading that scene in the manga.
(Though, I also thought it was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen).
Thank you for commenting - it really means a lot to me!

Thank you so much <3!
I admit that the manga made me cry too. The ending is just one of the most beautiful and yet saddest things I've ever seen.
I wouldn't know about fics because I haven't read a lot, admittedly. But that's because I think their dynamics are pretty much perfect in canon (and I'd just be picky and/or overly critical of fics that fail to capture things accurately).
It was really important for me to capture the dynamics. Glad to hear it worked!
