Rating: PG-13
Word count: 211
Prompt: Love Mode, Jin/Katsuki: Unlikely romance - ‘It’s the little things that count’
They say it’ll never last. You hear them talking about it when your back is turned, when they think you can’t hear, and after awhile you learn not to tense up every time you hear your name mentioned in the same breath as his, followed by the confident, contemptuous whisper, “It’ll never last.”
You mention it to him one time, as you lie sated in his arms for that brief moment until he’d push you away, your brain moving slowly and your mouth moving too fast; you don’t really know what kind of reaction you’re expecting, if anything at all, but somehow you aren’t expecting him to laugh, that low, softly scornful laugh that first made you notice him, that eventually made you fall in love with him. “It’s not funny,” you mutter, and try to nestle deeper into his side. He pushes you away and gets up to use the bathroom.
And you tell yourself that it doesn’t matter what they say in loud whispers behind your back, and it doesn’t matter that he’s never even told you that he loves you; you think about those fleeting moments when he lets you in close, when he lets you in, and you tell yourself that it’s the little things that count.
