Prompt: #14. Dragon Quest VIII/Final Fantasy VII, Angelo/Zack: mistaken identity, snarking, loneliness - "I'm sorry, I thought you were my old commander. He looked a lot like you."
A/N: I apologize for this being late. Too much work. Too much stress. Now I'm behind on my posts. I'd have liked to have done more with this, but I felt like it was more important to get it posted.

Mistaken Identity

Zack stumbled forward--one step, two--before dropping to his knees. Pain wracked his battered body. Mists swirled cold around him, blotting out all but a few feet in either direction. Somehow, he’d gotten separated from the others during battle.

Someone had said it was Sephiroth, but he knew his old lover would never betray them, would never betray him. He’d caught sight of the general moments before he’d gone down in a barrage of magic, powerful magic, too powerful to have been natural.

The eerie quiet closed in around him, wrapped in chilled fog. Miasmic tendrils reached for him, swirled around his legs, prevented him from rising.

In the distance, he heard the scrape of metal against stone. “Hello?”

Silence.

The tendrils squeezed, pulling him down until he was prostrate. No. He struggled, but they drained his strength, made him weak, drained his memories. Aeris. Cloud. SOLDIER.

The mist parted suddenly in a swirl of light. The tendrils fell back from around him, leaving him to clutch at the rocky ground, to drag himself forward across a barren landscape cast in a surreal light.

The ground dropped away, but instead of falling, Zack found himself lying on a sturdy battlement constructed of strong, gray blocks of stone. It was night, but moonglow lit the sky in the distance, casting the thin spray of clouds into ethereal light.

A man stood at the far end of the castle top, draped in a shadowy cape. A spray of silver hair cascaded down his back.

“Sephiroth.” His voice emerged as nothing more than a whisper, but he managed to gather some strength in his limbs, enough to lift himself from the stone and stagger toward the light. “Sephiroth!” This time, his voice was louder, but he stumbled, went down on all fours.

The man turned, a torch held high. Hope died in Zack’s chest. He forced back the sob that rose to his lips. Sephiroth. Only Sephiroth could help him, only Sephiroth could save him.

Relief lit the man’s face. “Thank the goddess. I was beginning to think I was all alone.” The relief vanished into a frown. “Are you hurt?” He rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside Zack. “Here. Let me see if I can help.”

“I...” Zack’s head sagged. “I’m sorry, I thought you were my old commander. He looked a lot like you.”

“Angelo.”

“Huh?” Zack rolled onto his back, squinted up into the younger man’s face. Now that he was close, it was obvious he was no Sephiroth. He was, however, as pretty, if not prettier, his moves as elegant as the dress uniform he wore.

“My name is Angelo.” He laid hands on Zack, poking and prodding gently until he sat back on his heels with a hiss. “Looks like this is the culprit all right.”

Zack followed his gaze, looking down his body to a gaping hole in his abdomen. The pain. He remembered it, but when it had vanished, he’d thought... Gods. Am I... “Am I...”

His eyes sought Angelo’s, but he didn’t miss the stain blossoming on the front of the other man’s coat.

“We...we’re...”

“Not really,” Angelo said with a sad smile. “And, this place isn’t so bad once you get used to it.”

“I don’t want to be dead.” Zack scrambled to his feet, surprised to discover that his strength had returned with the flood of fear.

“It’s more of a waiting place, really.”

“Waiting?” Zack swallowed hard. “For...what?” He turned a circle, his eyes settling on the castle turrets, on the dirty sky. It wasn’t really black, but more of a muddy color, and the light that brightened the skeletal landscape wasn’t really a moon.

“Angelo?” A woman’s voice ripped through the between-world with enough force to make the building tremble.

“Jessica.” He breathed the word and there was no mistaking the light in his eyes.

“Kazing!”

A bright light enveloped the uniformed man, surrounding him and penetrating him, raising him off the ground and into a halo-like glow. “Someone will come for you,” he promised. “Someone loves you. You wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

“Don’t leave me.” Zack followed the glow as it rose, reaching out to it, but Angelo vanished, leaving him lost and alone.

“Wait for me,” a whisper-soft voice begged. “I’ll come for you.”

It seemed like he’d been there forever, lost and cold and alone. He’d explored the castle, but it was empty, like the rest of the dead world in which he was trapped. In the distance, he could see light at one end of the plain. At the other, darkness so severe it swallowed everything.

So Zack had stayed there with no sign of day or night. Sometimes, he thought he slept. Sometimes, he thought he heard voices, but when he opened his eyes, there was no one there.

And then they came, one light and one dark, to fold him in their arms and hold him, to take him home, away from the darkness and into the light. And Zack realized that Angelo had been right. As long as someone loved him, he would never really die.

I love how poor Angelo is clearly quite familiar with being dead, and has total faith the others will bring him back. Sweet of him to take care of Zack like that.

Pity they didn't have time for a quick shag, though.

This is beautiful! Lovely stories like this make me desperately want to know about the FFVII folks. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and spend the big bucks to get a copy...
