Eiji turned around, curling up a little and staring at Oishi's face. He wanted to reach out, maybe to comfort Oishi, but things felt awkward. He stared at Oishi's chest instead, watching it rise and fall through each breath.
"I can't sleep when you're staring at me like that, Eiji," said Oishi gently. He turned his head and suddenly he felt a lot closer - closer than he had less than an hour ago, when Eiji had finally taken a chance and kissed Oishi on the cheek, only to end up beneath him, bodies moving solidly and shakily against one another. It all moved so fast and Eiji almost believed he'd imagined the entire thing. Except that when he woke up Oishi was still there, wrapped around him.
Now he was looking at Eiji, making Eiji's stomach feel unstable and warm, his whole body tingling. "Sorry," he said, trying to smile and not quite making it.
Oishi's brow furrowed. "Is something wrong?"
Eiji shook his head fervently. Words settled on his tongue, unsaid. He stared at Oishi, wishing for his body to move, to do something instead of just lying there, staring blankly at his best friend. His more-than-best-friend now.
Propping himself up on one arm, Oishi used his free hand to press the back of his palm against Eiji's head. "Do you have a fever?" He blushed, avoiding Eiji's eyes as he spoke again. "I didn't mean to be so...forward."
Eiji blinked. "You? Forward?"
Oishi laughed somewhat uneasily. Then he fidgeted. "I hope I didn't make you do something you didn't want to..." He brushed Eiji's hair back from his forehead. "You feel okay."
"Oishi." Eiji pulled Oishi's hand down to his chest, holding it there, unsure what he wanted to do or say next. How could he tell Oishi that it was okay? More than okay even, he added privately to himself.
He opened his mouth.
"I like you."
Oishi's face relaxed. "I like you too, Eiji," he said, smiling.
His eyes widened as Eiji pushed himself closer, until their lips pressed together. Eiji pulled back, just enough to look into Oishi's eyes. "Do you like me the way I like you?" he asked, wondering if he'd used the right words.
Oishi's cheeks coloured a little, his eyes fixed on Eiji's. "I've liked you like that since we first became doubles partners."
"Really?" asked Eiji. It was his turn to blush.
"Is that okay?" asked Oishi, sounding unsure.
"Nya," nodded Eiji, kissing him again on the lips. "I can't think of anyone better for me than you."
Neither looked at the other as they slid arms around each other, faces burning and hearts pounding; words spoken in the same silent communication they used during plays on the court, reverberating loudly between them.
Eiji fell asleep against Oishi's chest, listening to the faint thud of his heartbeat, comforting beneath his fingers that loosely grasped at his Seigaku jersey; a set of matching bodies draped over the covers, cuddling for the first time.
