Prompt: Power play -- you place a collar on the storm, and the wonder of it is that it bows to you
Notes: Another late one. Um. I fail.

"Search and destroy," she told him, and he laughed until the sound broke free of the receiver and escaped into the Hellsing mansion proper, rebounding from the walls and careening through her ears.

She silently vowed to learn how he did that, someday.

When he hung up, the echoes of his laughter remained. Integra folded her hands on top of her desk and waited. He'd call again, when his mission was finished. He never could resist the opportunity to gloat.

And he'd dispatch his target, of course. There was no question about that.

After she took her tea (Earl Grey with lemon; Walter made it perfectly), she pulled a Cuban cigar from the box she kept in her desk drawer. The smoke clouded her lungs but cleared her mind, and she sat in silence at last. Waiting. The shadows in her office crept outward, stretching themselves until they became distorted knife-thin reflections of the objects they represented, and then faded as the sun plunged below the horizon. She stubbed out the smoldering butt of her fourth cigar. Alucard must be enjoying himself.

She thought of making a trip to the firing range or conducting a surprise inspection of the Wild Geese, but she'd been down to the range this morning--her ears still rang from each shot she'd placed neatly though the paper target's heads the way her father and Alucard had taught her--and Walter's most recent report on Captain Bernadotte's men was only two days old. She doubted that the Captain's second-in-command could institute any drastic changes in Bernadotte's absence between then and now, certainly not without some word of it reaching her ears.

Besides, if she left her desk, she might miss Alucard's call.

And call he did. She let the phone ring twice before she picked up the receiver. "Report."

"My objective is complete." The contented note in his voice reminded her of a cat. She imagined him smiling like one, his lips curling up at the corners to reveal his fangs. "You should let me play more often master. I do enjoy it so."

"Good dog," she said.

His laugh that time sent a not entirely unpleasant shiver running through her. "But I'm your dog, aren't I?"

"Sometimes I wonder."

"Well, now. That just makes life more interesting, doesn't it?"

"It depends on your definition of interesting," she rejoined dryly.

"Do you want to hear how I slaughtered him?" His voice dropped lower, but she could still savor every word. "How I drained the dandy Alhambra to the dregs and claimed his soul as mine?" His last word was barely more than a rumble, one that resounded in her bones. "He tasted of cheap wine and bright lights. Smoke. The sticky grease of face paint melting in a heat wave."

Integra pictured each flavor as he mentioned it, snapshots painted in vivid colors against her tongue. "You'd tell me the rest even if I didn't prompt you to."

"I wouldn't if you forbade me." He almost sounded earnest. Almost.

"I don't forbid you."

"He lost his polish when he realized he was about to lose," Alucard said. "You should have heard him swear. It put my attempts at vulgarity to shame."

"I doubt that." She rested the receiver against her cheek.

"He tried to burn the hotel to the ground. I stood there and watched him scuttle away from me like an insect."

"The flames didn't catch you?" she asked.

"Those little sparks? They tickled." She pictured his grin hanging in the air before her like the Cheshire Cat's. "I seized him and dragged him back towards me. You should have smelled his fear, master. He was rolling in the stench of it."

"And then you killed him."

"And then I tore into his throat," he crooned. "I searched through his blood for what I needed, and I found it. I have many things to tell you when I return."

"Undoubtedly." She ran a gloved fingertip along the edge of her desk. "But he fought you."

"Oh, he spat curses at the sky. But he wasn't strong enough. Few are. Many think otherwise. And they overreach themselves, and then they're mine."

"Has anyone been strong enough?" she asked, her hand tightening around the receiver.

"Don't you know, Master?" he chided her. His chuckle seemed to come from a point behind her head. "The Hellsings, of course."

"And do you resent us for it?" she pressed him. She walked a fine line here, she knew, but she had not wavered or misstepped yet, and she had no plans to do so. "Do you dream of our souls resting in your gut the way Alhambra's does now?"

If she'd been talking to a human, she would have heard breathing on the other end of the line. It would have filled the silence. But this quiet was absolute. She didn't hear the click signaling the conclusion of their conversation, but neither did she hear anything else, not even the traces of his voice lingering in her ear.

"Sometimes. With the founder of your line--I imagine what would have happened." She couldn't hear any laughing undercurrent in his voice. Integra pressed hard on the receiver's earpiece. The skin around her neck warmed; her gloves itched from the heat of her palms. Did Alucard remember what warmth felt like? Did he ever miss it? "I'm so hungry when I wake from those dreams, master. Do you know what that's like? And then I think about you."

She set her glasses down on the edge of her desk. The world blurred and dimmed at the edges, narrowing until the phone and Alucard's voice were the only things with clear outlines, the only things still sharp in her mind. "And do you want to kill me?"

"No," he breathed. "It's simpler than that. It's not your death I desire."

"Then what is it?" She leaned back in her chair, fingering the armrest with her free hand; it slid faster and faster over the brass knob, sending sparks shooting through her hands. "Speak plainly, Alucard. If you dare to do it."

"How can I refuse your command?" She thought she heard him purr. "Your soul isn't enough. I want all of you."

Had there been a time when such a statement would have made her blush and scream? None came to mind. Still, to hear him speak so plainly--she pressed her back harder into the chair. Her fingers undid the knot holding her cravat in place; the silk slipped free around her throat and caressed it.

"You smolder, master," Alucard continued. "Deep beneath the surface, where you think no one can see."

"And you aren't afraid of getting burned?" she asked. Her lips brushed against the receiver's mouthpiece.

That time, he laughed. "It makes things more fun, don't you think?"

Yes, part of her whispered. "If your mission is completed--"

"It is."

"I expect to see you and Victoria promptly. Much needs to be discussed."

"I look forward to it, my master."

"Come home, my servant." There were times when she seemed to step outside of herself, and in doing so, marveled at the creature who claimed to serve her. Who did serve her. Who was hers to command, if her commands remained firm. And they would. Her voice dropped to match his tone. "And we shall see if that mouth of yours can be put to better use."

"Briliant!" he crowed. "Yes. Oh, yes."

Her lips curve upwards slightly. "I'll be waiting, Alucard."

That smoldered on its own! Very hot, and I loved the dark poetic language. I'm really impressed.

Lovely, that they banter and Integra's moved but yet still so throughly in command.
