Vaan stared around the Grand Ballroom in open amazement. Penelo, behind him, also felt intimidated by the sheer grandeur on display, but hoped that she managed to hide her astonishment better. Luckily, they were not left alone long to fend for themselves. Larsa quickly spotted them looking lost in the entryway, and came to greet them.
“Penelo! Vaan! It’s so good to see you both. Please, allow me to accompany you through the Hall, at least for a little while. It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other.” He held an arm out for Penelo to take. She did, and he began to lead her around the ballroom, Vaan trailing behind.
Too soon however he was called away by other guests, and Penelo and Vaan were left to fend for themselves. Penelo wanted to dance, but Vaan refused, and the dances were nothing like the ones they’d learned at home anyway. So instead they sat by the sides and watched the rich and powerful of the world dance and scheme.
“Come on Vaan, one dance?”
“Penelo, we can’t. I feel ridiculous enough as it is.”
Penelo sighed and tried not to pout. The decadent clothes of the guests were beautiful, the music pleasing, and the food delicious. And Larsa was the emperor, after all, he couldn’t be devoting himself to two nobodies when he was the host to a huge gathering of the elite of society. But stil…she wished she’d had more than five minutes with him.
And then he was there in front of her, all apologies, and holding a hand out to her in invitation.
“I am so sorry to have left you for so long, and after I invited you particularly for myself, you must be bored. Please, allow me to make amends and have this next dance with you.”
Vaan waved his apologies away, playing tough. Penelo smiled.
“Of course.” She clasped his hand and allowed herself to be pulled up and led onto the dance floor. Larsa positioned her into the basic position. He was taller than she remembered – the last few years had done wonders. She realized a problem.
“Larsa, I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I don’t know the steps.”
He smiled.
“That’s alright. Just follow my lead.”
Penelo could have sworn they flew.
