Cold and Warm

It's a strange mix, warm and cold.

Watching Ed sleep, he forgets, sometimes, just how young Fullmetal is.

It's easy to forget when he's got the cold of the automail against him. It is cold and hard, even when warmed by body heat, nothing that will ever be mistaken for flesh and bone.

Then, it's easy to forget. Easy to pretend that the reasons the boy has for acting this way was because he was older, not because he had seen too much already in his life. That the coldness he could show was the result of years of life, a slow march to maturity.

At others, well, Roy was reminded that this was probably a very bad thing to be doing to someone Ed's age. All of it. Putting him to use, in battle, in a war nobody even knew was being fought. In his bed.

But here was where Roy was reminded that, not only was Edward young, he was much more human than he let himself act most times. Here was where Roy remembered just how soft and warm Ed could be, though he would never tell the boy that. Just like all the other things Roy couldn't and wouldn't share. Not yet, not right now.

And, preferably, not when he and Ed were going to sleep next to each other.

He liked his hair the way it was, after all.

:) Very nice introspection into Roy's head and the slightly rose-tinted glasses he wishes he could use to look at the world. All the contrasts - between hot and cold, and young and mature, and human and less than that - are all very poignant. The concept of secrets is also very in keeping with Roy's character as well as the sort of relationship he and Ed have.

And that last line was awesome. :)
