Know By His Face
Mithrigil Galtirglin
He puts his hand on your shoulder—well, his gauntlet on your brace. There’s probably not much he can teach you, given the differences in what you do, what you are. There are a lot of things he’s done, you know, but you learned to throw knives for show, for sport, and he knows the art only to kill. The difference is subtle, but it’s there.
And you’ve been tailoring your art to his, these last few weeks. You have to. You’ve got all the swordplay you’ll ever need already, you think, know that once things kick off you’ll be forced to pick up more, and experience is the best tutor anyway. Sparring with him is probably an honor. He doesn’t do it with many.
-
You know, everyone here is pretty young. Only a couple are younger than you (even though you’re not exactly sure how old you are), but it’s not like the circus where the old men run the show and the young men are it. There aren’t really any old men here. There shouldn’t be, you don’t think. It’s not their kind of life.
You wonder how old
-
You were completely wrong about knowing enough swordplay, you know. Just because you’ll never be as good as him doesn’t mean you don’t have to get better. And it’s not that he says anything, but there’s this disapproving look in his eyes, and it’s been there since forever.
-
He puts his gauntlet on your brace and looks you square in the eyes and tells you to do it again so you back up and do it again and of course he parries it but this time you actually got the blade where you wanted it to go and he can tell and you can tell that he can tell, you know what his face does by now when something changes for the better.
-
That black-haired boy is going to be trouble. You’ve never seen
You’re actually a bit relieved, to tell the truth. There’s something safe about obsessing over someone so far out of your reach. You’re pretty sure you don’t really want to get into the fray.

Date: 2007-08-07 11:50 am (UTC)Great character study, really. And the ending paragraph, with its mention of safely obsessing over someone so far out of your reach and getting caught in the fray... Oh. Oh. Because, well, Caska and Eclipse, and now I'm going to curl up in silence.
