"Cloud, stop!"
"No, Cloud!"
Cloud froze, arms trembling from the weight of his sword and what he'd been about to do. As he lowered his blade, Aeris seemed to notice him for the first time, greeting him with a smile. Oh, gods, Cloud thought desperately as the sweetness of that smile pierced through him. What's wrong with me?
Another shout, this one of warning, directed his attention upward. A black blur, trailing silver like a comet, was falling from above. It was too fast for him to lift his sword and block, much too fast, but Cloud strained to swing it up even as he realized that he was not Sephiroth's target. Aeris-!
There was an awful, breathless moment when Sephiroth's sword entered Aeris's back and sliced out the other side. Then the world went white.
Something was holding him, restraining his arms and legs, wrapping around his torso in an unshakable grip. Its touch made his skin tingle, but Cloud had no mind to hold still and explore the sensation. "Let me go!" he cried, struggling fiercely. "Aeris!"
"Cloud?"
Cloud froze, hung limp in the grasp of whatever-it-was, as his vision cleared.
Aeris hovered over him, surrounded in a halo of white and inexplicably whole. As he watched, the whiteness writhed, separated into streamers of light that waved like the arms of an anemone. It was those streamers, Cloud realized with a sudden speeding of his heart, that were wrapped around him, lifting him half off the floor and making him squirm with his touch.
"Aeris..." he breathed.
The young Cetra looked down at herself, seemed to register her new appendages for the first time. "Oh my."
***
By the time the rest of the group joined them in the Forgotten City's sanctuary, a few questions had been answered. Yes, the new appendages (Yuffie insisted they were tentacles, which Cloud summarily decided didn't bear thinking about) were firmly attached to Aeris, sprouting majestically from her back where Sephiroth's sword had entered; yes, she had full control over them, and they were strong enough to lift Cloud's sword like it was a feather and delicate enough to tickle him behind the ear. They were also strong enough to restrain Sephiroth, though it didn't seem necessary - the man hung limply in a tangle of Aeris's new attachments, arms pinned over his head, his sword discarded on the floor still stained with Aeris's blood.
The sight of that sword snapped Cloud back to reality, if the term was at all applicable anymore. "Aeris?" he said, forcing his voice not to tremble. "What... just happened? Sephiroth - he stabbed you, and..."
"I'm not sure," Aeris admitted. "Something to do with my mother's materia, and - what?" She tilted her head, appearing to listen to voices that weren't there. Her friends kept respectfully quiet - they were used to Aeris's one-sided conversations by now, and in return she refused to be shy about it.
"Oh," she was saying, her voice echoing in the vast chamber, "is that what that was? I see. Thank you. It's Holy," she added, abruptly switching adressees. "My materia, I mean. I guess it was working, and when Sephiroth stabbed me, it just... overreacted a little." She gestured at her altered appearance. "I think I'm... I am Holy, or part of it. It's a little confusing," she admitted with a laugh.
"No damn kidding." Barret's voice floated over the water to them, rough with exertion as he navigated the pillars. "Just when I thought this whole business couldn't get any weirder..."
"I think they're nice," Nanaki muttered.
"Pervert," Yuffie teased, and danced away when Nanaki snapped at her ankle.
Vincent, meanwhile, bypassed the stepping stones, reaching the shrine in one easy leap. "What about him?" He nodded at Sephiroth, still hanging unconscious in Aeris's hold.
"Oh." Aeris blinked at her captive, tendrils of white shifting around his body. "I'm not sure. Maybe we'd better ask him."
"Ask hi-" Cloud started forward.
Aeris waved his concern away as her appendages curled around the mad General. "I've got him. I think I can help him regain himself a little, if..." She frowned, biting her lip. "Hang on."
Cloud's protest caught in his throat as Aeris began to glow, white shine collecting in a nimbus around her slight form. Cool whispers permeated the chamber, ruffling Nanaki's mane, making Vincent's cloak snap and flutter.
"Sephiroth," Aeris whispered, the name becoming a song on her lips.
For the second time that day white light flashed through the chamber, this time accompanied by a rush of cool air and a smell of flowers - and followed, faintly, by a yell and a splash as Barret lost his footing. As Cloud's eyes cleared, Sephiroth's eyes snapped open and his back arched, straining against Aeris's grip until his hair brushed the floor. Cloud went for his sword.
"Don't," Aeris warned, her voice ringing in the aftermath of her spell. "Don't, it's okay... shh..." Her attention was all for Sephiroth now, and Cloud loosened his grip on his sword, but didn't let it go, as their enemy thrashed uncontrollably, shuddered, and was still.
"Mother?" Sephiroth whispered.
Aeris laughed. "Guess again."
Close as he was, Cloud saw Sephiroth's eyes clear. "You. I... I dreamed I killed you."
Whatever Cloud had expected, it wasn't the soft, even vulnerable tone in Sephiroth's voice. "You did, dear," Aeris told him gently, "but it's all right." She started to loosen her hold, but Sephiroth gasped and gripped her in both hands.
"Don't," he begged. "Don't let me loose." His eyes slid away, toward Cloud, and the desperation in them was much like madness. "Hurry," he begged. "Use your sword. Before I-"
"Don't talk nonsense," Aeris rapped out. "There's already been enough bloodshed in Jenova's name."
"I agree with Sephiroth," Barret called from a stepping stone, wringing out his shirt, "and damn if that's not on the top ten list of things I thought I'd never say."
"I'll do it!" Yuffie volunteered.
Close as he was, Cloud saw Sephiroth bow his head, then bite his lip to stifle - what? A gasp, a cry of pain, or-? - as Aeris's myriad arms tightened around him. "Fine, we kill him," the girl shouted, her voice ringing with anger. Cloud, seeing the way the wind was blowing, quietly set his sword down. "Then what? Do you really think it'd be over?"
"It wouldn't?" Cid muttered.
"No," Aeris answered firmly, "it wouldn't. Sephiroth is the least of our-" She paused. "Sephiroth?"
Cloud followed her eyes to find Sephiroth shuddering in Aeris's hold, biting his lip fiercely enough to bleed. Up until this point he'd only ever seen the General's face in two modes - stony impassivity before Nibelheim, and stark madness after - and this confused, uncontrolled mix of every conceivable emotion racing each other across Sephiroth's features was dizzying to watch.
"Don't let go," he said - begged? His voice was too soft to be an order, too wracked with things unnameable to be exhortation. Cloud remembered the tingling sensation he'd gotten when those arms were wrapped around him, and tried to imagine how it would feel to be wrapped bodily in them, as tightly as Aeris was holding Sephiroth. Abruptly he decided that idea was something best explored privately.
Aeris smiled, touched a tentacle-tip to her killer's cheek. "Don't worry, dear, I won't." Sephiroth relaxed instantly, sagging against Aeris's hold, and the young Ancient sighed wearily as she pulled him securely close. "Cloud?" she murmured. "I think... I'm going to need your help with this."
Cloud straightened, becoming his First Class self once again. "I'm ready, Aeris."

I used to be a Sephiroth/Aeris shipper back in the day, and still have a strong fondness for the pairing, and this... this is WIN. I particularly love the way you've evoked Sephiroth's vulnerability. Great great stuff.
I have to echo everyone else. MOAR PLZ.
