Harry Potter (Snape/Harry)

Title: The One Where Snape Makes a Revelation and Harry Reveals Himself
Author: [livejournal.com profile] misura
Rating: PG
Warnings: None, really.
Summary: There were, Harry decided, a lot of things to be nervous about, and Snape wasn't helping.

"Personally," Snape started, causing the thought 'oh God, he's going to lecture me' to briefly chase the thoughts about what he was doing here and - perhaps, more importantly, in front of whom he was doing it - from Harry's mind for long enough to completely miss the rest of the sentence and only regain his senses when Snape stopped talking to stare at him.

"Mr. Potter, have you heard a single word of what I just said?" Snape asked, sounding a little put out.

"I heard 'personally'," Harry offered weakly. "And uhm, you said 'I' a few times?" That was a guess, actually, but it seemed a safe enough one. "Sorry."

"Under the present circumstances, I would appreciate your attention," Snape said, and okay, yeah, Harry could see that Snape had a point there. The problem was just that Harry was a little uneasy, so his mind grabbed any chance to distract him a bit. "It's one thing to ignore me when I'm attempting to teach a group of unruly teenagers how to prepare a potion without coming to any serious harm or, worse, causing severe damage to school-property, but at present, you are not here as a student. Nor am I here as your teacher," Snape added after a moment's thought. "You're free to leave."

"I ah guess I'd rather stay," Harry said. It had been hard enough to get to this point once - he had no desire to go through all of this trouble again, or to constantly suspect Ron and Hermione of having figured something out. "If you don't mind."

Snape shrugged. "It is your choice to make, Mr. Potter." Which wasn't exactly as enthusiastic and romantic a reply as Harry might have hoped for, but then again, this /was/ Snape.

"You can call me 'Harry', you know," Harry commented. "I'd like that, I think."

"As you wish, Harry." In romance-novels (the kind that Hermione didn't read, no way, and certainly not in the school-library), Snape's voice would have turned into a soft, silken caress as he pronounced Harry's first name. In reality, Snape's addressing him as 'Harry' only made Harry feel even weirder. Snape simply didn't go around addressing his students by their first names, no matter what.

"You were trying to tell me something about yourself?" Harry prompted hopefully. There were plenty of rumors about Snape's past, especially in relation to You-know-who, but Snape himself had never seemed very willing to talk about his life before Hogwarts, and Harry had thought better of trying to press him. In exchange, Snape had never brought up his being 'the Boy Who Lived' - or maybe Snape simply couldn't care less about Harry's past; either reason worked fine for Harry.

"Trying being the operative word, there," Snape replied dryly. "But yes, personally, when I first undressed in front of my Potions-teacher, I asked myself which I ought to be more ashamed of: the clumsy and foolish mistakes I made in class, or my own body. The answer was obvious, and helped me overcome my initial embarrassment."

Harry needed a few moments to decide which part of that statement he found most unsettling. "You slept with your Potions-teacher?" he asked at last, a little hesitantly. "That's ... uhm." Just wonderful. Snape had slept with /his/ Potions-teacher, and now Harry was about to do the same - was this some sort of Hogwarts-tradition Harry didn't know about? Was /he/ supposed to become a Potions-teacher, too, now? And what about Snape's lobbying to become a DADA-teacher? Was that just a smoke-screen? "I don't want to become a teacher here!" Harry blurted out.

"A most intelligent decision, if somewhat irrelevant to the matter at hand," Snape replied. "But to answer your question: yes, I 'slept with' my Potions-teacher. She was - "

"She?" Harry interrupted. "/She/?"

" - a most remarkable woman," Snape finished. "Is there a problem?"

"You slept with a woman," Harry accused.

"I fail to see how that is in any way important, or a reason for you to sound shocked." Snape glanced at the clock on the wall. Harry wondered if Snape was timing him, seeing how long it would take him to get out of his clothes. "I believe the Muggle-term would be bisexual, although in truth, I have never felt attracted to another woman after I finished my studies."

"Well, /I/ have never slept with a woman. I've never even kissed a girl!" Harry pointed out.

"Quite," Snape said. "This, then, would be your reason for leaving now? Usually, by this time, I'm either in bed and asleep, or in bed reading. I don't like changing my routine for no better reason than that a confused young man can't make up his mind."

"I'm staying," Harry declared firmly, fumbling with a pair of buttons that he'd barely even noticed when he'd gotten dressed this morning. "Stop rushing me already. Or trying to push me away. Or whatever it is you're trying to do."

"Actually, I'm attempting to put you at ease. Without much success, clearly." Snape sighed.

Harry stopped fumbling with the buttons and stared at Snape. "Oh."

"It has been too long a time, I suppose," Snape mused.

"Or maybe you just don't have any people-skills," Harry suggested, before he could stop himself.

Snape blinked, appearing not to have an immediate reply to that. Harry flushed and returned his attention to the buttons, eventually managing to get his shirt unbuttoned without tearing or ripping it. His trousers were a piece of cake after that - although he was aware that once those were gone, too, he'd have to look at Snape again. Oh well, surely Snape had to know he was nobody's favorite teacher?

"You are ... not unattractive," Snape said, licking his lips in a gesture that seemed mostly inspired by nerves, rather than any lustful desire.

"If that's the best you can do, you /definitely/ don't have any people-skills," Harry sputtered. "I'm freezing my butt off here, and you just think I'm not ugly? Thanks a whole lot!"

Snape frowned. "My rooms are kept at the standard room-temperature. They're hardly 'freezing'. And I would like to point out that 'not unattractive' is simply another way of saying 'attractive', as the two negative cancel one another."

"Room-temperature or not, I'm still cold," Harry said, exaggerating only a little.

"There are blankets on my bed." Snape's gesture was quite likely not meant as an invitation, but Harry chose to interpret it as one and plopped down on the bed, wrapping himself in a blanket that felt a lot fluffier and softer than he'd expected to find in Snape's bedroom.

"Okay, I'm ready for the show," Harry said. "And remember: I've never seen you mess up a potion, so I'm expecting something good."

OMG! *flails* This is one of my prompts and dude, you did a wonderful job with it. Love the awkwardness of it all and Snape trying in his own way to put Harry at ease. And poor Harry so nervous and yet so determined. And the end... *melts* Thank you so much!

1)Yay for actual mention of bisexuality in fic.
2)That last line was completely made of win.

Their awkwardness is so endearing. I love how their antogonism is still there, with a bit more affection - and the last line was the funniest in a long list of lines that made me giggle. Loved it.
