Summary:   Sephiroth muses on why he can’t quite corrupt Hotaru.

A/N:   Short, and once again probably not my best work.  I really should try to do better…
Disclaimer: I don’t own the ideas for FFVII or Sailor Moon, nor am I making any money off of this.
Prompt:
Final Fantasy VII/Sailor Moon, Sephiroth/Sailor Saturn: Puppet Strings: “she was on the edge; a single tug, and she’d be his.”

Balance

She was on the edge; a single tug, and she’d be his.

Sephiroth couldn’t say what kept him from making that tug.  His mother Jenova certainly urged him to do it often enough.  To make the final move that would bring the senshi of Death, Destruction and Rebirth to their side.  Hotaru wasn’t exactly loved by the rest of the court.  Still, it seemed a shame to ruin her.  Sephiroth turned his thoughts to her, to see Hotaru singing a lullaby to Serenity’s daughter.

“In my life, there’s been no balance, I was taught to lose or cheat, how am I to balance with no ground beneath my feet?”  Hotaru’s voice was sweet, high and clear.  Sephiroth found himself half enchanted with her voice, as he’d been the first time he met her.

“How will learning to be hurt and hate, help me to have a chance?  Though a crane may stand by balance, you will never see one dance…”  It was almost as if Hotaru was singing to him, not to the young princess.  As if she hoped the song would help Sephiroth in some way.

“For balance is a fairy tale, I never will achieve.  The naïve may find balance, but the bitter can’t believe…”  The song ended about then, cut short as someone came to fetch Hotaru for her duties as healer.  Sephiroth mulled over the song, before coming to a conclusion.  He’d never pull that string that would make her his puppet.  He couldn’t.

Hotaru was far too beautiful balanced between the light and the dark for him to ever make her fall.

Wow, that's a really interesting - and totally believable - take on why Sephiroth might prefer her just the way she is, as opposed to trying to corrupt her; she balances that line so carefully, so flawlessly, that he's attracted to that delicate balance and the way she walks the fine line. If she ended up either way, she wouldn't quite have the same pull to him. It's her darkness and power that makes him want her to begin with, but it's her lightness and love that he's inevitably drawn to. All that in less than 300 words. Awesome. :-)
