What do we do if it's too long for one post? I'm not sure that's going to happen but I think it might.

make two or more posts for the same story. :D From what I've read in the archives, it's been done before.

Why, thank you! ^_^ It was leftover from a Harry Potter RPG called nocturne_alley, where the characters posted their own livejournals throughout Harry's sixth and seventh years at Hogwarts. Nranged was the fan community for it; its name came from the fact that Draco's mood for his entries were almost always "enraged". XD Some wondered if it was due to sexual fustration, or other means.

Or, just keep adding the rest of the story as comments. That way it's all in the same post.

I saw this post and had a reflexive moment of, "OMG, it's already time???" panic.

Then I remembered my stories are done.

So now I can just bounce around going "It's almost time! It's almost time!" :D

The tags "phoenix wright: phoenix/edgeworth", "phoenix wright: phoenix/miles" and "phoenix wright:phoenix/edgeworth" are the same thing (the pairing Phoenix Wright/Miles Edgeworth).

I'll stop being annoying now.

Yeah, so tags could use some cleaning

From: [personal profile] nyxmidnight
Tags have sometimes multiplied because people wrote the fandom differently, switched the names in the pairing around, wrote a new tag instead of taking the one that was there, or made a typo.

All the firsts tags could be merged into the seconds:

Devil May Cry

devil may cry (sparda/eva) same as → devil may cry: sparda/eva
devil may cry 3: dante/vergil same as → devil may cry: dante/vergil
devil may cry: vergil/dante same as → devil may cry: dante/vergil

Digital Devil Saga

digital devil sgaga: gale/demi-fiend same as → digital devil saga: gale/demi-fiend
digital devil saga serph/demifiend same as → digital devil saga: serph/demi-fiend
digital devil sage: gale/cielo same as → digital devil saga: gale/cielo
digital devil sage: gale/roland same as → digital devil saga: gale/roland

smt: digital devil saga: argilla/sera should be → digital devil saga: argilla/sera
smt: digital devil saga: naoki/seraph should be → digital devil saga: demi-fiend/seraph

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
This is made difficult by the nameless hero...

smt: nocturne: dante/hitoshura should be → smt: nocturne: dante/demi-fiend
smt: nocturne: hitoshura/futomimi should be → smt: nocturne: demi-fiend/futomimi
smt: nocturne: hitoshura/sakahagi should be → smt: nocturne: demi-fiend/sakahagi
smt: nocturne: isamu/protagonist should be → smt: nocturne: isamu/demi-fiend

There's also a superfluous date tag:
oct 9 same as → october 9

I'm sure if one looked through the big fandoms like FF and Bleach it'd be possible to shave off more tags...

I'll be more than happy to give you a clean-up listing for Final Fantasy VII tags. There's a lot of weeding out that can be done there. Let me know if nobody else is working on this already.

Do we really need the special 'ac' tags for Advent Children fic? Half the fics out there under vanilla Final Fantasy VII tags are AC era anyway, so it seems kinda pointless.

Also, do we really need reverse images of the same pairing? I see no need to have both cloud/vincent and vincent/cloud, since there's no hard and fast rule that it actually signifies top/bottom in the fics anyway. There's a bunch that could be weeded out that way (since apparently most everyone on Gaia is a switch-hitter, lol).

Well, that sucks. Did you try posting a question on a LJ help journal to find out why that is? If it keeps a ghost count even when you delete tags, seems kinda pointless to continue deleting them.

Date: 2008-02-01 01:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yhibiki.livejournal.com
On the whole tag issue, I'm wondering if the author name tags are that important? Because while browsing the comm, I tend to only search by fandom/pairing, and if I want more by an author I'd check their personal journal? Although that's just me. Dates also seem a little bit superfluous, but less so if you're trying to find the fic that was written for you specifically. (That is -- I know I requested something for feb 15, so if I'm late in checking it's easier to find it again... but in that case, I would hopefully also know what fandom/pairing I requested it for?)

Just my own two cents. ^^;;

Date: 2008-02-01 04:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] snipervalentine.livejournal.com
Here's two cents on the other side - as a reader, I use the author tag every bit as much, maybe even more so. There are certain writers whose stuff I'll read regardless of fandom, just because they're great writers. I often refer people to this comm based on author, so that's how they find the work.

Also, for people just discovering the comm, and they read a new piece and really like it, odds are they are going to click on the author's tag to see if they've submitted anything else.

I'd really hate to see the author tags go. The date tags? Never once used them, but that's just my own experience.

Date: 2008-02-01 11:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yhibiki.livejournal.com
Yeah, date tags are probably more useless unless you're one of the recipients. So clearing the date tags would add another couple of slots for fandom tags. I think there are more authors than dates though, and the number of authors will only go up. :/ Stupid 1000 tag limit.

I'm kind of the opposite, I guess, where I always get sad/disappointed if an author writes outside of my fandoms because I just can't read something if I don't know the characters. And I get into moods for a certain pairing/fandom, which is why I like those tags more XD

Date: 2008-02-02 01:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yhibiki.livejournal.com
:/ I guess because the comm is way over 1000 tags? That's lame. >(

As an absolutely last case scenario (once both authors and dates are gone, I guess...) I could see the pairings being removed and being sorted only by fandom, which is fine for small fandoms that only have like two or three fics anyway but would get annoying in the bigger ones. :/

Going over the list though, here's some more that could be safely removed:

final fantasy viii; irvine/squall; brush - 0 uses <-- :O no uses anyway

"ffvii rufus/reno" should be "final fantasy vii: reno/rufus"
"final fantasy vii: zack/cloud" and "final fantasy vii: cloud/zack" could be merged
all the "final fantasy vii/ac" tags could be just "final fantasy vii" and merged with those
"final fantasy vii: sephiroth/zack/cloud" and "final fantasy vii: sephiroth/zack/cloud/" are the same thing

"final fantasy xii: basch/balthier" is the same as "final fantasy xii: balthier/basch"
"final fantasy xii: balthier/fran" is the same as "final fantasy xii: fran/balthier"

"fullmetal alchemist: ed/roy" is the same as "fullmetal alchemist: roy/ed"

"good omens: aziraphale/crowley" is the same as "good omens: crowley/aziraphale"

"kingdom hearts: cloud/leon" is the same as "kingdom hearts: leon/cloud"
"kingdom hearts: roxas/axel" is the same as "kingdom hearts: axel/roxas"
"kingdom hearts: saix/vexen" is the same as "kingdom hearts: vexen/saix"
"kingdom hearts: xigbar/luxord" is the same as "kingdom hearts: luxord/xigbar"
"kingdom hearts: zexion/lexeaus" is the same as "kingdom hearts: lexaeus/zexion"

These don't need to be cut, but seem a bit inconsistent; all other tags don't include the "ii" part, and the general "kingdom hearts" tag isn't used anywhere else, and I don't think we have general fandom tags anyway? :O
kh2/ffxii: luxord/balthier - 1 use
kingdom hearts - 2 uses
kingdom hearts ii: demyx/auron - 1 use
kingdom hearts ii: luxord/demyx - 1 use
kingdom hearts ii: xaldin/demyx - 1 use

"kyou kara maou: conrad/yuuri" is the same as "kyou kara maou: yuuri/conrad"

There's one tag labeled "magic knight rayearth: eagle/lantis", while the other two start with "mkr" -- they should all be the same, I think.

The lone "potc" tag links to a "will/norrington fic," so I guess it should be "potc: will/norrington".

"pretty guardian sailor moon: kunzite/zoi" should just be "sailor moon: kunzite/zoisite"

"pride and prejudice: mr darcy/mr bingley" is the same as "pride and prejudice: mr darcy/mr. bingle"

"princess princess: tohru/yuujirou" is the same as "princess princess: yuujirou/tooru"

"prompt master list"; "prompt submission"; "prompts"; "requests" -- could those be merged into one?

"reboot:bob/dot" is the same as "reboot: bob/dot"

"round 2"; "round 3"; "round ii" -- do we still need those? (round 2 and round ii are the same thing anyway)

Could "rules" and "rules for claiming" be merged?

"saikuyi: dokugakuji/kougaiji" should be "saiyuki: dokugakuji/kougaiji"
"saiyuki: gojyo/hakkai" is the same as "saiyuki: hakkai/gojyo"
"saiyuki: gojyo/sanzo" is the same as "saiyuki: sanzo/gojyo"
"saiyuki: goku/sanzo" is the same as "saiyuki: sanzo/goku"
"saiyuki: hakkai/sanzo" is the same as "saiyuki: sanzo/hakkai"
"saiyuki(gaiden): tenpou/kenren" is the same as "saiyuki: tenpou/kenren"
"saiyuki: dokugakuji/gojyo" is the same as "saiyuki: jien/gojyo"

"tokyo babylon/x: seishirou/subaru" could probably be merged with "x/1999: seishirou/subaru"

I tried to use tags this morning, and it wouldn't let me because of the 1000 tag limit. My fault for picking weird pairings, I know... ;-) But I couldn't even put the date on it.

On a subject totally unrelated to tagging, I sent a message to the folks at [livejournal.com profile] ff_press - the wonderful, all-flavors of "Final Fantasy" daily newsletter on LJ - apprising them of the fact that posting for Round IV began here today, so to keep a lookout for fic/art.

Those of you in fandoms that have similar newslettery type thingies might want to do the same and let them know. Those newsletters are a great way to draw in new readers.

I just posted my springkink and tried to add some tags (my name, digital devil saga: gale, and february 2)

I stuck the tags into Excel, it seems there are currently 1072 tags, and that's why we still can't add any. :/ *tries to weed through it*

Right now, even if we do get rid of the superfluous ones, I don't think it would help that much. :/

Date: 2008-02-03 12:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yhibiki.livejournal.com
Yeah, I tested it out, I managed to weed out around 40 tags but that's still over the 1000 tag limit. :/ Stupid LJ. And having 999 tags really doesn't help at all. (This is why I think author tags should be cut as well, especially since a lot of authors have only one fic listed anyway? But there are those rare authors who've participated often and have 50 fics on the comm...) *whine, moan, and complain* Ideally LJ can be convinced to allow comms to have more than 1000 tags. >_>

Are the tags still a work in progress? The tags I found most useful are gone. All of the Weiss Kreuz pairings are gone, and when I click on the Weiss Kreuz tag, only 3 stories show up? I never used the date tags because I never remember when they were written. However, I usually relied heavily on author tags and pairing tags.

I do see some author tags, but the one I am looking for (example: daegaer) is not there. And with some authors that are still listed (example: fireun), not all of their stories pop up when their tag is clicked. I realize you are struggling to trim tags because of the limit. I am just concerned that there is no way for me to find the stories I want to read.

I don't flock my fic here. If I'm asked to, I'll stop posting. I have two beautiful kids, a boy 15, a girl 16.5. I don't ask other people to parent them. Ergo, I don't expect to parent other people's kids. It's a pretty simple concept, really: watch your own kids, and prohibit what you find objectionable.

I'm not sure if this is the right post to comment on, but it was the only one I could find. Unfortunately, I've run completely out of time to work on two of my prompts, so I'm hoping it won't be too much trouble if I drop them. The ones I'd like to drop are:

Feb. 29 - Final Fantasy VII, Cid/Vincent: animalistic behaviors - Cid acting as Vincent's alpha - "Learning the language."

Feb. 29 - Transformers (movie), Barricade/Frenzy: acceptance - "He's never asked him to calm down."

Again, sorry if this is the wrong post to comment on!
