A Skewed Sense of Home by Zan

The leaves fly gently about and flutter. It is a dance of several tones of red, orange and gold. While it is clear and the breeze brisk, the man sweeping the leaves looks up to the sky and thinks to himself it might rain later. There seems to be a storm gathering, Hakkai can sense the moisture in the air and can see the clouds a ways off on the horizon.

“Ah well, it will be nice to stay in,” He thinks to himself.

Hakkai likes this time of year. The heat of the summer lost in a haze like fading shadows. The turning of the colours marks the seasonal change and reminds him that it is good to be alive. … and the rain? Well it is just rain now.

Well that is not exactly true. Sometimes he might indulge in painful remembrances as if the years before the journey and now do not exist. It is something he will keep with him forever. It is something he feels he cannot - ought not - forget.

“Hey!”
“Gojyo.”
“Hey I thought you might need a drink.”
“Oh,” Hakkai raises an eyebrow. “Lemonade? No beer?”
“Well I thought this may be more thirst quenching.” Gojyo explains.
“Come on you.” Gojyo chides him, “You’ll sweep a hole in the ground if you’re not careful.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah you’ve been sweeping the same spot for the last five minutes.”
“Ahahaha!”
“You know after all this time that still doesn’t sound like laughter.” Gojyo observes.

Gojyo pries the rake out of Hakkai’s hand deftly with one and hands him the glass of lemonade with the other. Hakkai gratefully takes a long swallow of the drink. It is tart but sweet at the same time.

“Here” Gojyo beckons to him. “Siddown.”

Hakkai joins Gojyo on the plaid shirt that he put on the ground by the tree he was sweeping. With the trunk at their backs for support, Hakkai leans against Gojyo.

“Umm this is nice,” Gojyo mumbles.

Hakkai looks over, Gojyo looks half-asleep almost and he is smiling a quiet smile. Hakkai nudges at Gojyo gently. For some moments, he is lost in the colours of autumn. He is lost in the dance of red, mirroring the orange and gold about them. It is as if the sunlight is playing music only he can hear. Gojyo closes his eyes again.

Hakkai settles himself again and closes his own in contentment. He wraps himself in the feeling – this closeness and the warmth it gives him. His senses might be slightly askew, but it is his sense of home – after all.

Mmmm, that's really rather nice. I can see Hakkai being the sort who enjoys staying in on a nasty day, with something tasty cooking in the kitchen and a pot of tea on the counter and his best buddy+ playing out poker hands on the table nearby ... .

Oh my gosh, that was simply lovely. Nostalgic and colorful and just a little bit sad--bittersweet might be a better term. I really enjoyed this piece. Thanks for posting it. ^^
