Longing (Digital Devil Saga: Sera)
Title: Longing
Author: belladonna12
Rating: Pg13
Word count: 356
Summary: Varnani is persistent, always there, always demanding and wanting.
A/N: This one went differently then I thought it would at first. I’d planned to do a straight forward fic about Sera having to deal with Varnani and the demonic hunger to devour. Then I thought ‘there are all kinds of hungers, why deal with only that one?’ and the result is this short little piece. Hopefully someone will like it.
Disclaimer: I don’t own the idea for DDS, Atlus does, and I’m making no money from this, so please don’t sue me.
Prompt: Digital Devil Saga, Sera: demonomania - dealing with new hungers
Longing
Sera almost can’t understand how Serph bore it, how the others bear it.
Granted, she only has Varnani to base her experience on, but the demoness is always hungry. Always. Sometimes it’s just a little wistful sense of how good that Ose looks, can they have dessert, other times it’s a ravening scream for food of any kind. Blob, Rakshasha, even at one point thoughts of what Prithivi would’ve tasted like streaming from Varnani to Sera. The demoness never shuts up, always trying to get what she wants.
That hunger’s bad enough, frightening enough.
The first time Sera finds herself admiring the strength and grace Vayu can display, the clean arch of his legs as he kicks down his prey to devour it, she wills it away as a fluke. Then memories of
But Varnani sees Fred, sees a child/cub/nestling, and wants one for herself.
The demoness keeps trying to convince Sera, enticing her with images of Serph, of Gale, wistfully of Roland, Heat and even Cielo. Any of them, even in the weak pink forms that have no good claws or fangs, if only she will give Varnani a cub/nestling/child that they can call their own? Children are important to any species, and it wouldn’t even matter to Varnani if the nestling/child/cub was human, Asura, or some bizarre in between creature, as long as it was hers and Sera’s and their mates.
Sera hates that she prefers the demonesses hunger to kill and rend and devour to this other, more subtle and equally ancient hunger. Those hungers she can understand, even deal with most of the time. But not this. This hunger for a child that sometimes displays purely human characteristics, sometimes purely demon, and sometimes the bizarre intermingling of human and demon known as berserk.
This hunger that Sera isn’t entirely sure is Varnani’s alone terrifies her.

The little bits about the animalistic aspects was a nice touch.

The description of the others, and wanting to taste Prithivi, were fantastic - the note about Vayu's grace especially to me, given Gale's my favourite character :).
Great work! :D
