[KH Axel/Roxas] I Remember
Title: I Remember
Artist:

Rating: PG
Warnings: worksafe--if you don't mind people possibly knowing that you like reading about boys cuddling.
Summary: Some memories Roxas keeps for himself
Prompt: Kingdom Hearts, Axel/Roxas: lazing in the sun - something about the warmth and light reminds them of hearts
A/N: Well, this behaved better than other stories, but it came out more angsty than I had planned. O_o And why in the heck is Sora in here? Anyway, the style isn't something I've tried before, so I hope it turned out okay.
Roxas doesn’t share all his memories with Sora when they merge. Some he keeps for himself, to watch while his other is asleep and he has more control over their shared consciousness. It’s an odd feeling, like watching a movie with yourself in it, only there’s no sound. It’s okay, though, because he knows what’s happening.
There’s the beach near Atlantica. It looks empty, then a patch of darkness appears and two figures step out. The first is tall, skinny, and lanky, with longish red hair and green eyes. His name is Axel. The other is shorter, his blond hair mussed, and blue eyes wary, like he’s looking for any possible enemies, or just wants to make sure they aren’t seen. His name is Roxas.
They’re both wearing long black coats, but those are quickly removed to reveal black jeans and t-shirts—blue for Roxas, red for Axel. Axel says something that makes Roxas flush, then charge him and tackle him, starting an impromptu wrestling match. It ends with Roxas pinning Axel, sitting on his stomach like a schoolyard bully. Roxas’s eyes widen for a moment, then he slides off, quickly and almost clumsily, while Axel laughs. Roxas shoots him a glare that only makes him grin unrepentantly, then put and arm around him and start walking down the beach.
It’s unclear how long they spend walking, though it’s definitely a while. Roxas slows them down by looking for sea glass and shells. He finds a large piece of green sea glass that he gives to Axel, who quickly pockets it. They make a game of trying to see if they can shove the other in the water, but neither wins and both manage to stay mostly dry, if damp around the pant cuffs, with soaked shoes and socks that are quickly taken off.
They make it back to their coats and Roxas flops down on the sand, closing his eyes, smiling. Sunlight always makes him feel lazy, sleepy, and a little too relaxed, like the rum Axel snuck back from Port Royal that one time. Only, where that had left him sick and wondering what other people saw in the stuff, sunlight has the opposite effect. They’ve done things like this before, and he usually has more energy afterwards, nap or no. The dull ache—the feeling of emptiness— where his heart should have been is gone, too.
Axel lays down beside him and he almost unconsciously curls up against his friend, resting his head on the other’s shoulder and flinging and arm across his chest. Axel doesn’t complain, simply puts an arm around him, holding him close. Roxas absently thinks that if Axel makes a crack about him being catlike one more time, he’s going to start making puppy comments. Axel’s too damn good at finding him.
They really should be getting back. They’ll be missed, and if they stay too long someone will be sent after them (good lord, if it’s Demyx or Xigbar they’ll never hear the end of it). Laying here like this is nice, though, and the sunlight feels good, helps drive away the cold feeling of The World That Never Was. So neither of them moves, one half-drunk on light and the other watching over him.
As the memory fades, Roxas starts to drift off, too, trying to hold on to that feeling of warmth. No, he doesn’t share all his memories with Sora. Some of them are his, and his alone.

Thank you for this! Also, loved the little side about "if it's Demyx or Xigbar" - made me giggle :D.

It just never sat with me well that Roxas accepted being part of Sora so easily. I think the part of him that had him yelling "my heart's my own" would make him keep some things for himself.
*hugs back* Thank YOU for the lovely comment. :)

Damnit! I dun care if he's part of Sora! His Other would probably be more than happy to find Roxas a way to get his own body--and maybe his friend back, too!

Sora would, I think, would do all he could to let Roxas have his own life as his own person. Sadly, circumstances don't allow for it. ;_;
