Title: if X = CHOCOLATE print "♥"
Author/Artist: volta_arovet
Rating: G
Warnings: Vague spoilers for the middle of the .hack/legend anime
Word count: 600
A/N: I'm using real life names for real life situations
Magi = Asako Shirakura
Kamui = Saki Shibayama
Reki = Satoshi Fujio
I'm using a mishmash of canon, since there are parts I prefer from the manga, and parts I prefer from the anime.
It was eternally springtime in Dun Loireag, and the desert sun made the air shimmer and twist in the outskirts of Fort Ouph, and the sweet salt breeze of Naval Monte made the city cool and refreshing, but outside the CC Corp head office the air was bitter cold. It was late at night, and all the sane, happy people of Japan ought to be bundled up warm in their homes, fast asleep.
Asako Shirakura wondered how many of the teams of programmers still working that night fell into that “insane” category. She mentally checked off a certain pair of system administrators and added an “also very annoying” to the assistant of that pair. Satoshi Fujio continued to find new and subversive ways to get on her nerves. She herself fell neatly into the “sane but driven” category, and her boss—
Holding the tray of beverages carefully in both hands, Asako nudged the office door open with her hip and shivered at the rush of cold air.
—her boss was crazy and was going to die of pneumonia if Asako didn’t kill her first. She took a deep breath.
“Want something hot to drink?” Asako chirped, setting down her tray.
Saki Shibayama took a drag off her cigarette and aimed the smoke unerringly at the open window. It was almost impressive how she could do that without removing the VR visor. “Coffee?”
Asako shook her head, though it was a moot gesture since Saki couldn’t see it anyway. “Cocoa. Someone—“ Fujio, damn it, always one-upping her “—managed to get a sample set from a gourmet store.”
“Hm,” Saki said. She flipped her cigarette and used the butt as a pointer for her interface. Again, this was halfway to being admirable, if it didn’t mean open windows and ash burns on the equipment.
“Trouble?” Asako asked, leaning over Saki’s shoulder to peer at the monitors. Saki’s hair, a bit wild from the static and the cold, clung to her cheek.
Saki exhaled roughly. “Just annoying. Someone wrote a preservation code into a bug that makes it duplicate whenever it’s marked for deletion, and of course one of our new debuggers didn’t realize this until he tried to delete it a dozen times, so...” Saki groaned, then shivered. “It’s going to be a late night.”
With one practiced motion, Asako snatched the cigarette from Saki’s hand and replaced it with the cocoa. “Drink. You’re freezing.”
Saki made a little moue which strangely complimented her severe face, but she did as she was told. Her eyebrows went up. “It’s good.”
“Of course,” Asako said. She leaned over Saki’s shoulder again, checking her progress, and her heart did a little flip at the way Saki leaned back into her warmth.
Saki laughed, a deep, husky sound born of too many cigarettes and long nights.
“What?”
Saki shook her head. “PM from Reki. He says that his boss really likes the cayenne pepper in his cocoa, and wants to know what brand you use.”
Asako grit her teeth. “I’m sure I have no idea what he’s talking about.”
Saki laughed again. “Are you going to join me?” she asked, motioning towards the computer on the opposite side of the room.
Asako thought about the way Saki leaned into her against the cold, the way she was laughing, the way her sharp cigarette smoke blended with the smooth chocolate steam, and she thought about closing the window, moving across the room, and putting the blinding visor over her eyes.
“In a minute,” Asako said, and leaned in closer.
