“Here you are,” said Yukari, holding two styrofoam cups of hot coffee, sitting beside Mitsuru in the bench. The day was kind of warm, nice for a January afternoon. “I got us some sweets from the shop, too.”
“Thank you.” Mitsuru reached for her cup, looking at the white plastic material with interest before blowing the steam off it. She took a sip of the coffee, making an approbatory noise. Then with the other hand, she reached for Yukari'’s
Mitsuru entwined their fingers and smiled, a bit soft and a bit shy. Yukari was not sure if she had seen an expression like that before on the other girl’s face. Mitsuru was usually so sure of herself. She wondered what was happening, a bit worried.
“Hey! Loosen up a bit, sempai.” Yukari winked, giving her hand a little squeeze. “Is something the matter?” She looked around, almost expecting to spot a disturbance in the peaceful atmosphere.
“If this is a bold move in public, I apologize.” Mitsuru said, lifting their holding hands a bit. Only then Yukari connected the dots and realized what was she referring to. After all, they were in the middle of a crowded street.
She smiled, tried to be reassuring:
“Uhm, no. Don’t worry, it’s... Actually it’s more noticeable when it’s a boy and a girl holding hands. Two girls holding hands usually means they’re just close friends.”
Mitsuru nodded, serious, and there was something on her expression that made Yukari felt like she had said the wrong thing. It was like when they first met, and Mitsuru was that intimidating presence, always proper, always perfect.
“Did I say—?”
“Something wrong? No, not exactly.”
“Well, I’ll be here if you want to tell me.” She could not stop the words, but they held no sarcasm, and Yukari wondered if that meant she was finally learning to control herself.
Mitsuru sighed, looking to the distance to put some order in her thoughts. The sight of a cat –and a boy trying to feed it- greeted her.
“My main motivation will always be to take over the Kirijo Group and honor my father. Still, I’m young. There are lots of things I want to do, even if they’re not exactly appropriate. If the plan fails, I will have never done them.”
Oh –Yukari thought with a start, hearing the words unsaid - Mitsuru had been worried about what she felt on this, not herself. Mitsuru was the Kirijo heir. It was not even a matter of her upbringing. It was the fact that she was letting the world know there was someone close enough to let her hold her hand.
Yukari stroke the back of Mitsuru’s hand with her thumb.
“I don’t plan to go dying on you.” She said, keeping her tone playful. She had to believe it, too. “You’ll see. After all this is over, we’ll still stick together.”
Mitsuru blinked, measuring the amount of truth hidden in Yukari’s jokes. Then smiled and got an arm around her waist.

I think I officially pissed off Nyx with this one. S-sorry, darling. In my case, subtext is stronger than dislike. D:

I've looked so long and hard for Mitsuru/Yukari stories where its a) not about two hot people being together; b) abusing Artemisia's vorpal blade by making Mitsuru totally domitrix. Or however you spell it. Her first relationship is obviously with Minato, should the MC date her, and if not, then with Yukari in the fics. Thus, knowing Mitsuru's also social awkardness, would be rather shy/unsure/easy to pick on XD Ignore that last one please. XD
...
...Besides, if anyone would be the agressive one, it'd totally be Yukari XDD
This tiny fluffly oneshot just made my day. Scratch that. It made my week <3
Write more? Please? 8D This is just short of salvation, finding an author of your caliber for this pairing; there's one paticular Mit/Yuk author who is so horrible, yet so popular, that I almost abandoned my OTP. Provide a ray of hope for this lonely fan? 8D
