Summary: A conversation on a ship. Post-series.
“We won’t be able to see each other again in a long time,” Kushana said. This was the first time coming back from Shuwa Valley she’d had the chance to talk with Nausicaa in private. “My duties in Torumekia will keep me busy a few years, and I don’t think you’ll have much time to spare either.”
“That’s why I wanted to make sure to return you this.” It was her cloak. Kushana felt she’d given it to Nausicaa a long time ago, but only a few days had passed. Like the clothes of those who came back from the crypt, the cloak was now dyed bright blue.
“I hope you didn’t trouble yourself to retrieve it.” It was still warm with the heat of Nausicaa’s body. Almost without realizing, Kushana held it to her cheek.
“Not really.”
“Of course, I can’t wear it anymore. Now it’s something to be preserved for the future. Possibly will become a symbol.”
And still...
“But I’d rather have you keep it,” Kushana said. “That way, you’ll remember me.”
“I would remember you anyway. But I’ll take it if it makes you happy. It may become a symbol for the Dorok.” Nausicaa removed her blue-dyed tunic. “Here, so you won’t forget me either.”
Kushana smiled. “We’ll meet again. I know it. We... have something unfinished.”
”I think that’s something that hasn’t started yet. Unless you feel different. I mean, I would probably fall in love with you if we stayed together, and maybe already have, but I can’t. Not now. There’s so much that needs to be rebuilt.”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. But Torumekia hasn’t been a safe place for people involved with the royalty in far too long a time. Maybe you would like to come visit me after that’s changed.”
“I think I would like that,” Nausicaa said.
