Once upon a time -- Rue stops there, and thinks not of a maiden who loved and was left for another woman, thinks not of the princess who gave her wings for the prince, thinks not of princes and love, because she is not a princess, and she won't have an ending like that.

The music turns and Rue dances the way she knows even though she thinks she doesn't fit now: she's not a princess and she's not a prima donna, she's just a girl who loved selfishly and who hurt so much the one she loved. She goes en pointe, then lower, arms stretched behind her, raises her leg and she thinks:

'I turned him into a monster'.

Her arabaresque breaks; Rue crumbles and sobs, covering her face with her hands.
