"That's why I told you."
Kirika heard those words, and she heard the tears that Mireille had been holding back. She knew what Mireille had meant; Mireille was the more experienced one, so of course she had seen all the signs. Kirika had just been so overjoyed to have had a halfway normal relationship with another person that she had been blind to everything else.
She ran her hand over the sketchbook in her lap, and upon it was the shadow of the plant that sat on the apartment's windowsill. Milosh Havel had known nothing about the girl he painted with, and yet he had treated her like a normal person, like a friend. Kirika had no emotions; she never felt sad when she killed anyone. Yet, now that someone had seen her as a human being, the tears wouldn't stop. She supposed she had loved Milosh, and now her heart ached because of it.
Mireille sat down next to Kirika on the couch and wrapped her arms around the younger girl's shoulders. Perhaps Mireille's eyes were as bloodshot as hers, but Kirika didn't lift her head to confirm that. Mireille lightly brushed her lips against Kirika's forehead and then said, "You should forget him. You shouldn't be in this kind of pain."
Kirika smiled through her tears. It was a weak, pathetic smile, but a smile nonetheless. She would never forget Milosh, but if she could protect Mireille, she believed she could find some sort of redemption. It was her fault Milosh was dead, but she would make sure that she didn't lose Mireille as well. They didn't have a normal relationship, but Kirika still and always would treasure it.
