Soubi has a tendency to show up in his window at night and just watch him. It makes Ritsuka edgy, nervous, maybe a little strange. His breath comes faster and his heart beats and it's embarrassing. He alternates between trying to ignore him in order to get his homework done and yelling at him to get out before his mother comes investigating.
"If Ritsuka commands."
But he never orders Soubi not to come any more.
He should; the whole situation's bad enough as-is, with the old Ritsuka gone and him never knowing when he'll vanish so the old one can come back, and hoping it's soon. With Seimei's death. With spell battles. He never wanted to be a part of this, but now that he is, he just wants a straightforward path to get revenge on Septimal Moon for Seimei's death.
Vampires were never supposed to be a part of it.
That Soubi is one is ... well, annoying at best. With Soubi only able to operate at night, Ritsuka is pretty sure that one of these days he's going to get challenged by someone from Septimal Moon -- maybe Midori and Ai again, maybe not -- when Soubi can't be there to fight. The thought isn't a bad one, necessarily; a free one, yeah. But it's dangerous.
And Soubi's... weird.
He realizes this more than ever before when Soubi shows up in his window again and is stumbling, looking weak. "Soubi! What--"
"It's nothing," Soubi says, and he's smiling, but there's an edge to it of recrimination; that bastard, he's telling himself he shouldn't have come here. "I just wanted to see you. I should go."
Soubi's been looking odd lately to begin with, like he's stretched thinner and thinner. Ritsuka shakes his head. "What's going on? You don't look well, Soubi--"
"It's nothing, I said. I don't want to get Ritsuka dirty. I shouldn't have come," and he's backing towards the edge of the balcony.
It hits him in a flash; he knows Soubi's a vampire, and he knows what Soubi hasn't done in front of him. "Soubi! Have you been feeding?'
"..."
That stupid guy, Ritsuka thinks. He has a headache, he's tired. He presses the heel of his palm to his forehead, remembers yelling at Soubi when he first found out, that it's gross, that he doesn't want that. "You haven't been."
"Ritsuka said--"
"I didn't think you'd take it seriously! Go feed on someone. Keep feeding!" Ritsuka says. He wants to cry a little. "Feed regularly and keep yourself healthy. Stupid!"
"Is that an order?"
"Yes! Yes, it's an order, Soubi!"
"Ah," Soubi says. He smiles, a pained expression. "Okay. Then I will. -- Someday, when you're older, will you let me feed on you?"
"Go! Idiot," Ritsuka says, and when Soubi is gone, when he's sure Soubi's gone, he sinks down against the wall and hugs his knees to his chest. "Idiot," he says again, aloud. He's so tired. "What kind of vampire needs to be ordered to feed? Really."
*
Lately, Soubi's not been coming around much, but he's got the impression Soubi's caught up in something dangerous. He won't answer his phone, but Ritsuka keeps trying, keeps dialing. Eventually, it goes through. "Ah, Kio?" Breathy and pained. "I need help. I--"
Who the hell's Kio? "Soubi!"
A pause.
"Don't you dare hang up!" Ritsuka says. "I'll get you, where are you?"
And he goes.
When he gets there, Soubi is beaten and bloodied. "Idiot," Ritsuka says. "What were you doing?" He tries to lift Soubi and can't, instead Soubi falls on him. A heavy weight. A dead weight. He can't quite laugh. "Soubi..."
"Ah, there he is, there he is!" he hears. "Look, he--"
It's a pair of young boys, pretty boys. They stop and stare at each other. "Who are you?" they both ask at the same time.
They are, he finds out on the trip back to Soubi's apartment, Soubi's... food. Two young cute boys who have been living with Soubi. Ritsuka stares at him.
"Well," Soubi says, painfully. "You told me to."
"I didn't say this!"
"Should I kick them out?"
Ritsuka grits his teeth, but just says, "Don't talk right now. You're weak. Let's get you back and... do what we can."
"Well," Natsuo says, and flicks his hair back from his neck. "That's a lot."
"Why haven't you done it yet?" Youji asks, smirking. "Are you shy?"
Ritsuka blushes. "I'm not shy," he protests, but they laugh at him.
*
Soubi is still weak, still bedridden when the other team shows up outside. He starts to push himself upright, but Ritsuka pushes him back down with hands on his shoulders. "Don't," he says. "It's impossible, Soubi."
"We'll go," Youji says. "We're strong."
They do; it's something Ritsuka can barely understand from the little he's heard, something about sharing a name or sharing an identity or something, some matter of pride that doesn't matter. Instead he stares down at Soubi, in pain, staring back up at him.
"I don't know what to do," Ritsuka says.
Soubi smiles. "Ritsuka doesn't have to do anything," he says, and he reaches out and puts his arms around him. "They'll take a while outside."
"Oh," Ritsuka says. His heart is racing. Soubi knows more about what's really going on than he does; Soubi always does. "Okay."
Soubi pulls Ritsuka down on top of him; he's surprisingly warm and comfortable. Ritsuka tenses up, can't bring himself to pull away.
"This is all I want," Soubi says. "To be this close to you. I want to become part of you, I want you to become part of me. I want--"
"Soubi," Ritsuka protests, but it comes out tiny and it comes out choked. "I--"
He can't continue. Soubi's mouth is pressed against the side of his neck in little kisses. He's tingling all over, weak and anxious and he wants to give up.
Ritsuka closes his eyes and waits.
