Title: "Due Justice"
Author:
n_finitefangirl
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Franziska (she is a warning of her own sometimes), slight spoilers for 3-5, if you haven't played that far yet.
Summary: Franziska doesn't like it when people mistreat her sweet little PA...
Prompt: Franziska/Iris: insight--"You're actually a nice person"
Author's Notes: Yes, I know that, IRL, convicted people don't usually work in most positions at the DA office. However, this is the Ace Attorneys universe. Thus, it's very possible for Iris to be hired as Franziska's Personal Assistant (And yes, our dom!prosecutor insists upon calling her that instead of the offical job-title of "Secretary".) And since Iris is seemingly expelled from the Hawthorne family, it only makes sense, in my eyes, for her to use her mother's maiden name as her last name. And I definitely say this takes place in a slight AU, about a good year or two after Trials & Tribulations. And one final note: Franziska's very presence could make the young prosecutor in this story feel very, very nervous; he learned not to mess with her on his first day there. ;)
Oh, and this is a day late. ^^; My deepest apologies to the prompter.
Iris Fey was, in Franziska's eyes, the perfect Personal Assistant. She always showed up on time--often early--and always remained focused on her tasks. Her work was as impeccable as a non-von Karma could be, and her timing on delivering items to the Chief Prosecutor couldn't be more accurate. She always dressed modestly, yet tastefully so, and that sweet warm smile rarely left her face--and even then, it was for perfectly understandable reasons, like her foolishly foolish boyfriend Phoenix Wright breaking his arm on some foolish ski trip. Even during those few times when she wasn't smiling, Iris always continued her work as perfectly as she always did.
Never was there a better PA for the Chief Prosecutor...until today.
It was precisely 10:05. Iris Fey was late. With Franziska's tea, no less. Franziska should've been sipping her tea by now. Also, she should've had at least three more police reports on her desk--reports that, usually, sat right next to the teapot on the silver tray Miss Fey always used.
It was now 10:06. Iris Fey was exactly six minutes late.
Clearly, Franziska did not accept such a foolish break in the habit.
She had just put her hand on her whip--which laid on the left side of her desk--when she heard a knock on her office door. However, the voice that followed was not female. "Ch-Chief Director? May I come in?"
von Karma frowned warily. "You may enter."
A rather nervous Klavier Gavin--Edgeworth's foolishly foolish student--shuffled into the office. "Ah, Frau von Karma, I...well, I mean no offense--"
"Speak, fool!" Franziska ordered, her hand tightening its grip on the whip.
Gavin immediately stood up straight and stammered, "It's Iris--that lovely Fraulein Fey. She...I saw her running to the women's restroom, drenched in coffee and crying. It-it was several minutes ago when I saw her run into there, Chief Prosecutor. S-So, thinking that she have had a terrible accident, I headed straight to the break room to see if anyone could explain things. I...I heard things said there that I would never have expected to hear from the mouths of our own people, especially about a wonderful, lovely fraulein such as darling Miss Iris--AAAHH!" He suddenly cried out in pain as the whip found its mark on his right arm.
"Get to the point, Gavin!" Franziska held her whip above her head, ready to strike again if needed.
"J-Ja, Chief Prosecutor! Well, I overheard two women as they cleaned up quite a mess near the sink, and I recognize one of them as my own secretary. They...they were talking about how--how they..." Klavier took a deep breath and said very quickly, "They dared claim that Fraulein Fey was a spy for Phoenix Wright, and that she deserved having hot coffee dumped on her for spying upon you and Herr Edgeworth!"
Stunned silence hung in the air for a minute or two.
"What. Did. You. Say?!" the Chief Prosecutor growled.
"They called her a traitor! They--they claimed that Herr Wright sent her here to spy on him! And they even..." He clenched his fists and he spat out, "they even laughed at how they poured coffee all over that sweet, gentle, delicate Fraulein..."
Von Karma carefully studied young Gavin for a moment. There wasn't any trace of his foolishly arrogant vanity that would suggest that he was lying. A familiar fire burned in his eyes--a fiery desire to deliver justice upon the wicked; a need to right the wrongs that he had seen and heard. A look that she normally saw in Miles' own two eyes.
She slowly lowered her whip. "Where exactly did she go again? Where is Iris Fey, at this moment?"
"I believe she is in the ladies' restroom down the hall, Chief Prosecutor."
Franziska stood, coiling her whip before attaching it to the belt-hook on her left hip. "Thank you for informing me, Herr Gavin. I will handle this issue myself."
"As you wish, Frau von Karma." Gavin bowed and held the door open for her.
Franziska immediately marched straight to the women's restroom and paused upon the scene before her: Iris Fey, sniffling as she attempted to wash coffee stains out of her blue vest. The rest of her clothing also bore large, strong coffee stains, and the brown liquid even dripped from strands of her raven-black hair. A few tears rolled down her cheeks from red, puffy eyes. At that moment, Iris looked nothing more like a poor, lost puppy that's been kicked. Badly.
And at that moment, Franziska had never felt so upset--so furious--about seeing Iris Fey not be her sunny, cheerfully sweet self. It was like...like seeing a wounded Adrian--or worse, her little brother in a hospital bed. It just seemed so...wrong...to see Iris cry--to see her actually shed tears...
"Iris Fey," Franziska softly spoke.
Iris jumped and looked at her boss in surprise, then she suddenly became fearful. "M-Miss von Karma! Oh, I-I-I'm so s-s-s-sorry! I-I had an accident in...in the breakroom! I'm so clumsy sometimes... I really am sorry--" And the poor girl babbled on and on about how foolish and weak she claimed to be.
Franziska simply walked up to her and gently cupped the other woman's chin in her hand. "There is no need for foolish excuses," she said, still speaking softly. "I know it was no accident."
"Wh-What? But-But Miss von--"
"Iris Fey, I know that whoever did this to you foolishly thought that you were guilty of office treason."
Iris' eyes widened. "How--How did you...?"
"A fellow associate overheard the private confessions of the incident and reported it to me. What I need to know is exactly what foolish crimes they foolishly charged you with that those foolishly foolish fools thought you deserved such cruel and unusual punishment for." After a few moments of silence, Franziska added, "Please, tell me. I assure you, it will not go beyond the two of us."
"N-Not even to Pheenie?"
"No...not even to Phoenix Wright." By this time, Franziska had pulled out her hankerchief and began wiping aways those tears that should've never been there in the first place.
Iris sniffed for a moment or two. Then, she began to speak: "I...I was preparing your tea, about five minutes before 10. Then...Mr. Gavin's secretary and Mr. Payne's secretary came in to get some coffee, and they saw me. They...they grabbed the two pots of coffee that were ready and they...came over to where I was brewing your pot. Then...Mr. Payne's secretary began saying things like...like I was Pheenie's spy in the office. That-that I was here to tell him private information on important cases! I-I'd never do that! Never! And Pheenie would never ask me to do such a thing, either! He's too kind and just to think such things!
"And then...Mr. Gavin's secretary said, 'Well, if she's a criminal, then she deserves to be punished, right?' And Mr. Payne's secretary agreed and they...they..." Her voice choked up as the tears returned.
"They poured both pots on you, didn't they?"
Iris nodded. "Th-That's why I didn't get you your tea. Some of the coffee actually got into the pot and ruined it. I...I'm really sorry, Miss von Karma..."
"Only a fool would foolishly believe that such foolishly foolish actions was all her fault." Franziska wiped away the tears again. "Clearly, you need the rest of the day off to clean up and recover yourself."
"B-But Miss von Karma! The Staff Meeting's within an hour! Wh--"
"I can handle those fools all by myself. I will just make due without your cheerful presence to fool them into agreement. Now, would you like me to get your coat? It's very cold outside, and it would be terribly foolish for a wet person like yourself to become sick from the journey home."
"You don't really have to go through all this trouble for me--"
"Actually, I do." Normally hard eyes softened with caring concern. "It would greatly upset me to lose such a perfectly capable Personal Assistant to such a foolish disease such as the common cold."
Franziska pondered her offer for a moment or two...then smiled gratefully. "That...that would be wonderful, Miss von Karma. Thank you."
"I will return shortly. Stay here."
Franziska was surprised to see Miles Edgeworth standing at Iris' desk, holding her coat. "How is she?" he asked quietly.
"Gavin told you, didn't he?"
"Ranted about it, to be exact," Miles explained as he handed over the coat. "I had never seen him so furious over anything, even during that one time he called his own brother out on false evidence. Of course, I don't blame him for being so angry. There really is no reason to be claiming such things about Iris."
"I agree. She has be nothing more than a loyal, hard-working Personal Assistant."
"Secretary," Edgeworth automatically--and foolishly--corrected her for the thousand time that winter.
"Secretaries are foolish fools who just sit there, take calls, and dictate things. Personal Assisants are true helpers, and that is exactly what she is. Now, I want you to call those two foolish fools into my office, and I will deal with them after I escort my Personal Assistant out to her car." And she immediately turned to walk away, not catching the grey eyebrows raising up in honest surprise.
Later, as Franziska hails a cab, Iris smiled through the hood of her parka and said, "I must confess, Miss von Karma, I believe Pheenie was wrong about you--at least, how you've treated me."
"And why do you say that, Iris?"
"Well...Pheenie feared that I would have to suffer whip lashes everyday. But...you've never hit me. Not once. In fact...you've rarely spoke an unkind word to me beyond my first week. You're...you're actually a nice person, once I look beyond your whip and your title."
Franziska blinked as she watched Iris step into the taxi. "...Iris?"
"Yes, Miss von Karma?"
"...you are far kinder than I will ever be. Never be so foolish as to change that part of yourself." And before she could hear a responce, Franziska shut the passenger door and walked back into the building, her mind still wrapping itself around those sweet words of Iris Fey.
The next day...there were two jobless women bearing deep whip lashes, and Edgeworth swore he saw Franziska returning Iris' "good morning" smile with a truly pleasant one of her own.

Small correction: "fraulein," not "frauline." Just thought I'd let you know.
Edit: Excuse me for the strikeout text that was here before, and my deleted comment. I'm just an idiot. :D
