Prompt: Persona 4, Rise/Naoto: crossdressing -- I didn't even think about the female vote!
Word count: ~1100
Summary: Naoto's all composure; Rise wants to rattle the cage.

The key is knowing which buttons to push. Rise has a gift for it.

The boys lining the corridors of Yasogami High just want Risette's attention; all it takes is a well-timed smile and they'd pull down the moon. Girls are harder. Girls want to be convinced that they could do what Rise does, that she just got lucky. So she has to be a little more subtle, a little more self-effacing, a little better an actress. All things to all people. It's how Risette works, and it should've made the pageant easy - but in the end, Rise doesn't mind losing. Because the person who won, and how they did it...well, that's just fascinating.

The uniform doesn’t fit, not really. Naoki’s still taller than her, he doesn’t curve in the places she does and the whole binding thing just sounded way too painful. It'll do, though. Crisp white shirt, stiff black jacket and pants, clean and smart. Rise admires herself one more time in the mirror of the girls' restroom - shoots herself a smile that could light up a stadium - and pushes through the door, back out to the rows of lockers and benches.

Gym class ended over fifteen minutes ago, but Naoto refuses to change in front of the others. She's still here, tucked away in the corner furthest from the locker room door, carefully buttoning up her shirt. Doesn't notice Rise, but she never really notices anyone.

Boys want Risette. Girls want to feel good about themselves. That's how it worked, till Naoto - sharp but ambiguous, handsome and pretty - snared them both without even trying, and one week after the pageant, Rise knows she'd have voted the same way as the rest. Composed, cool attitude, always in control; it's what makes Naoto Naoto, what attracts so many girls. It also makes Rise want to rattle the bars.

"Hey, Naoto-kun!"

Naoto almost jumps, but catches herself and folds her arms tight over her chest instead. They drop again when she looks Rise up and down, eyes narrowed. "Rise, why are you wearing..."

Rise smirks as she walks closer. "Thought maybe I'd try for the female vote."

If she's confused, Naoto hides it well. "By dressing as a male?"

"Hey, worked for you, right?"

Naoto says nothing. Steel grey eyes and not a hint of a smile; every inch the proper boy detective.

But Rise's persistent. "I mean, I was pretty impressed, Naoto-kun! I figured if anyone'd beat me, it'd be Yukiko-senpai." She gives a bright, well-practiced smile. "Didn't even think about the girls."

"There is no reason to be impressed. It was completely inappropriate. A trivial carnival." Naoto adjusts her shirt collar, then starts combing her fingers through her short hair. "I expected you to win."

There's no malice in the words, but Rise still rolls her eyes and summons her most indignant expression. "Thanks, Naoto-kun. I'm trivial, huh?"

Naoto stares at her for a moment, as if replaying the last few sentences in her head. Then she frowns. "I didn't mean..."

"Kidding, Naoto. I don't care about the contest."

"And nor do I." Still using her boy voice - Rise's always wondered how she keeps it up - but it's even tighter than usual. "I should never have been involved."

"Aw, c'mon. Cheer up, Miss Yasogami!"

Naoto's shoulders instantly stiffen - and Rise thinks, gotcha.

"Why are you here, Rise?"

Rise tilts her head and grins, fingers tugging gently at the collar of her shirt. "Oh, no big reason. Figured I'd just show you my new look."

"What, precisely," Naoto says - and Rise thinks she might just be gritting her teeth - "makes you think I would care?"

"Of course you would, Naoto-kun!" She smiles again. "You were the inspiration!"

There's less than a foot of space between them; Naoto's probably too rattled to really notice. Rise might be pushing this a little far, maybe - but Naoto's playing along, right? Paying attention, too.

"I...I haven't the time for games, Rise. If there is nothing you need, then..."

"Maybe I feel like being a boy." Rise leans closer, both hands clasped behind her back. "Maybe you can teach me."

Naoto shakes her head sharply. Her fingers fumble with the hem of her shirt. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Well, why not? Figures the Detective Prince would know better than anyone."

"You're a girl, Rise," Naoto mutters, standing on tiptoes to pull her jacket down from its hook. "A girl in a boy's uniform."

Rise smirks. "So are you."

Again, Naoto says nothing, just stares firmly at the wall - but her fist clenches tight around the collar of her jacket.

"Maybe it's just about looking the part, huh? Or is there something more?" Rise knows there is - something else completely, brittle and fascinating - but adds, "Has to be pretty simple to fake, right?"

"I can't teach you how to pretend, Rise, that isn't--"

"C'mon! I just want a few pointers. Am I standing wrong? Should I talk differently? What do I need to change?"

"Everything!" Naoto snaps, throwing the jacket on the bench and swiveling to face her. "But you won't, because you aren't--"

She doesn't have chance to finish. Rise grabs her shirt collar, she steps forward and pulls her into a kiss. It's gentle but firm, or at least she hopes it is, and for a single moment, Naoto doesn't move; doesn't react; doesn't resist, even when Rise's tongue dips against her lips.

Only a moment, though.

"R-Rise! What ar--stop that," Naoto stutters, pushing her away. No force in it, though. She looks aside, and Rise watches the gears in the machine click back into place. "I, I don't--"

"C'mon, Naoto-kun. You're supposed to be a boy."

The machine halts. Naoto glares, jaw clenched - and when Rise grabs her shirt this time she kisses back, harder, both hands gripped tight over Rise's shoulders and her fingers pressing lines of heat through the borrowed jacket.

She might kiss like a boy. Rise honestly doesn't know. Nothing to compare it to, despite all the rumours. But it's rough, careless, just a little nervous - and maybe, she'd like to think, maybe close to what it would be like.

Then again, maybe that doesn't even matter.

Naoto's the one to break it first. She pulls back slowly and they're left pressing up against each other, faces inches apart, Rise's fingers still tangled in her collar.

"Thought so," Rise whispers, and almost laughs. "I couldn't ever fake it."

"I...I'm sorry, you...you were..." Naoto's face is flushed dark red, even after she jerks back from Rise's grip and grabs her jacket from the bench. She pauses - manages to look Rise in the eye again, just once - then stalks away, disappearing behind a row of lockers. The door slams shut seconds later.

Rise takes a deep breath and leans back against the wall.

Even now, she still can't tell who or what Naoto is. If she's being honest, just for one moment, she's even less sure about herself.

But that's fine, Rise thinks. She'll figure it out. She just has to learn which buttons to push.

PERFECT OPENING. If there was any way to describe Rise fully in two sentences, that would be it! Rise's one of my favourites from P4 and I love seeing fic where she's being coy and devious. ♥

I love Rise. After Naoto, she's my favorite girl in P4. This fic sets her up as seeming a bit more... manipulative and plotty than I would normally think for her, but then again, she does seem to understand human nature really well.

I couldn't help feeling like Naoto might think she was being mocked, though. But then again, it's Rise, and Rise and Naoto have an interesting dynamic from their interactions in the game.

(Plus, Rise borrowing Naoki's uniform is like the best thing ever. I love my Konishi sibs).

Ah, you know, I think you're right about Rise. I can see Rise as enjoying something like that.

(Yes, yes! Rise and Naoki would be such cute friends. I want a freshman fivesome of cute--Rise, Naoto, Kanji, Naoki, Ayane.).
