Title: The Truth

Prompt: Phoenix Wright - Phoenix/Edgeworth - alternate uses for the magatama - "Do you love me?"
Word count: 425
They were in bed and it was warm and comfortable. Phoenix felt content after their round of pleasantly fulfilling lovemaking but one little thing bugged him and wouldn't go away. He knew he had to ask and he wanted the truth this time. Surreptitiously, he closed his hand on Maya's magatama and raised himself slightly out of Edgeworth's encircled arms. Leaning over his lover, he planted a light kiss in his lips then looked down at him seriously.
"Do you love me?"
Instantly Phoenix saw three psyche-locks appear, chaining Edgeworth's thoughts. Getting to the truth of this one was going to be tough. Phoenix wasn't sure whether to be disappointed by Edgeworth being so closed or excited to find out what he was hiding.
He tilted his head, scrutinising the prosecutor.
"You're not looking for a straight answer, are you," Edgeworth stated under that gaze. He then sighed, "It's complicated, Wright. Love is... I don't know if I understand it."
"Not as easy as finding the guilt in others?"
"Guilty until proven innocent is how I have to work. You know that," Edgeworth had tensed slightly. Phoenix leaned warmly against him and kissed him again.
"I'm not criticising you. I know it's your job, though I still think you should switch to defence. You did so well defending me."
Edgeworth ran his fingers through Phoenix's hair. The spiky parts were surprisingly soft. "What's done is done."
"You're avoiding the question," Phoenix noted.
"... Love means having to lose things."
"What do you mean?"
"If you love, you get hurt," Edgeworth said quietly.
Phoenix heard one psyche-lock shatter. He was getting somewhere but he didn't like the sad tone in Edgeworth's voice.
"Not always," he said in soft reply.
"You could leave. You could find someone else. You could... die."
Another psyche-lock broke.
Edgeworth went silent.
Phoenix rested his head on the larger man's chest, listening to his heartbeat.
"I know things happen," Phoenix said after a moment. "But that doesn't mean you can't try. It doesn't mean you can't trust me to... want this to work."
Edgeworth's fingers continued to caress Phoenix's hair. His breathing sounded normal but Phoenix heard the man's heart beating suddenly faster.
"Then, I do."
"Huh?" Phoenix looked up again.
Edgeworth looked a bit torn, struggling to say the next words.
"I... I do love you."
Phoenix smiled as the last lock disappeared. He embraced Edgeworth and held him close. "No more secrets," he smiled as the magatama dropped out of his hand, falling with a soft thump to the floor.

Date: 2009-06-11 10:52 pm (UTC)The magatama was used in the second game of the series.
From a Wiki article: "The magatama has a special ability to allow its possessor to see Psyche-Locks, which appear when someone is hiding information from the user. After presenting the Magatama to someone, the user can proceed to break the person's Psyche-Locks, using evidence to piece together a portion of the secret being hidden. More deeply buried secrets have more Psyche-Locks on them (and thus are tougher to unlock). Once all of one's Psyche-Locks are broken, that person will finally admit to the truth and will reveal his or her secret in full, elaborating on what he or she knows about the subject in question. This information could be in the form of evidence or dialogue, and it is often helpful in court."
