There is flailing and gibbering going on here! This is sheer genius. Just... everything. Cain's ranting about curare tablets, Riff's eloquent letters, the references to Riff's past. And the format is brilliant.

This is just brilliant. I can't believe how much of Cain's voice came through in a telegraph, seriously. How many words was that? And contrasting them with Riff's mild-mannered, pornographic letters - I love it so, so much.

This was so clever, and as someone mentioned, darkly humorous. The format made it that much more fun to read, it's the most original and interesting story I've read just in format. But, you did so well with their personalities XD The contrast was great, and Cain made me laugh a good bit. I was kind of shocked that Riff would dare mention such things in a letter, though, if his purpose really was to get Cain to come back faster, he certainly knew how to do that. XD

I think Cain has the public profile necessary to get away with it should Riff's letter be intercepted - worst case scenario, he'd have to flee to the continent if he couldn't bribe anyone. (Most of the gay scandals of the 1890s - always excepting Wilde - seem to be about getting caught in brothels or with rentboys. Cain and Riff, by contrast, would've kept it within the household - their problem would probably be a blackmailing servant.) And Riff, at least, has a subconscious reason to be getting Cain into trouble.
