Prompt: Final Fantasy VIII – Rinoa/Squall/Seifer – A twisted love triangle, leading to the boy’s deaths and Rinoa going mad with guilt – “It was my will that sent you riding off to meet your fate/ It was my anger drove you and I see my wrong too late/ It was my jealousy that scorched you off still wondering why/ And all that I can think now is/ I sent you off to die”

It had started innocently enough.

Rinoa had noticed how Squall and Seifer were whenever they met. There was a tension and even some kind of spark - while not visible she could feel it strong in the air around them. At first she told herself it was nothing but as time passed and the spark remained between the two young men she found herself becoming jealous of their connection. Much as she did feel there was something between herself and Squall, it paled in comparison to that intangible electric spark.

She remembered how dynamic Seifer could be. He could get you so caught up in his goals and dreams and you were swept along with him. Squall made her feel things in a different way. He was quieter but his passion was strong, if not so vocal. But the two of them together was something else entirely. She'd seen them duel but it hadn't happened for quite some time. Things were becoming pent up. She could sense that. She had to do something about it or that spark would never go away and there would always be Seifer's presence in the way of her happiness with Squall.

And so, one day when she'd lost her temper at seeing Squall staring fixedly at Seifer for an inappropriate amount of time, she hatched a plan. She wanted them to fight; to get it all out of their systems.

Nobody was supposed to get seriously hurt.

A few days later she told each man in turn that the other had become possessed by something evil - maybe it was another sorceress trying to take control again, she suggested to them.

With a grim nod, Squall set off to the place Rinoa indicated that she'd seen Seifer heading to. She'd already spoken to Seifer, who had defiantly gritted his teeth, anxious to prove himself, wanting to be the hero who stopped the threat this time. They'd likely arrive within minutes of each other, she predicted.

Seifer prowled around the area, confidently calling out Squall's name. He was feeling hyper and itching for the confrontation.

It wasn't too long before Squall appeared with gunblade at the ready. The brunette looked fierce and there was an instant clash of metal as their weapons met.

Seifer had a dangerous smirk on his handsome face. Squall had seen that expression before and it just made him fight harder. They were so closely matched that the duel continued into the late afternoon and as the sun's last rays illuminated the sky a blood red, two damaged figures fought on, each determined to rid the other of the alleged force that had taken them over.

It was uncertain who made the fatal mistake. Either way the result was the same. Squall's gunblade swung around suddenly, too quick for Seifer to avoid it. The resulting wound sent blood spurting through the air but Squall also faltered as almost simultaneously Seifer's blade struck him from the other side. He stumbled to his knees as Seifer also buckled, both bleeding heavily.

"It's done," Seifer was saying as Squall's vision dimmed. "I've defeated the sorceress. I destroyed you."

"What...," Squall's words were left unfinished but a hint of his confusion came across to Seifer as he too collapsed.

It was very late that night that Rinoa, worried frantic that neither Seifer nor Squall had returned, set off to the site. She used magic to light her way but even so the darkness seemed to consume her surroundings.

She was almost upon them before she saw them.

There was blood everywhere. The glowing light around her showed the red in sharp contrast, particularly against Seifer's white coat. She gasped in shock and immediately crouched next to Squall. She checked his breathing and was horrified to find none.

A small noise then made her turn to Seifer. She went to his side, finding his breath very faint. She said his name and a whisper came out from him:

"You... destroyed," and then there was no more as his life gave out.

Rinoa's own breath hitched and she started to cry, though she didn't realise it yet.

"No," she said out loud, then repeated the word as she performed her most powerful of healing spells, meant to resurrect the dead. She performed it first on Squall, desperately looking for any sign of movement. Nothing happened. Her mantra of 'no' continued as she repeated the spell.

Twice.

Three times.

Four.

No change.

She let out a shriek of despair before trying the spell on Seifer. Maybe it wasn't too late for him...

Again, nothing happened. Neither young man awakened.

She dropped to her knees between them, burying her face in her hands and sobbed as the knees of her dress soaked red with their blood.

"Destroyed," she echoed Seifer's word, torn even further that she hadn't even seen Squall at his last. No goodbyes, forevermore. "My fault. my fault...," she repeated in a broken whisper, her body shaking, her eyes wide and seeing nothing; her mind going blank with the horror and the shock and the guilt of what she had instigated.

Over the next few minutes the surroundings rang with her alternate screaming and crying, until she finally stood up and began wandering aimlessly away from the devastating scene. Her feet carried her forward but she was not aware of even moving at all.

The light around her dimmed and she didn't notice that either.

The darkness had swallowed her completely.
